September 9, 2014… JUNO-award winning singer-songwriter Hawksley Workman is bringing his critically acclaimed one-man cabaret The God that Comes to the Stratford Festival Forum this September 11 to 20.
Inspired by Euripides’ tragedy The Bacchae, The God that Comes is a wine-soaked rock-’n’-roll cabaret celebrating the god of wine and ecstasy. Mr. Workman plays all the characters and all the instruments in a solo performance that fuses the chaotic revelry of a rock concert with the intimacy of theatrical storytelling. The show is a tonic for a society that has lost its sense of balance, and for a people that have lost touch with their animal instincts. It is an invitation to raise a glass together, hear a story, and get lost in the music.
Described as “both talented and a genius” by the Toronto Star’s Richard Ouzounian, Mr. Workman has received high praise from audiences and critics alike for his spectacular performance. The Calgary Herald’s Stephen Hunt calls him “a charismatic talent, a 21st century showman, a raconteur and wit who also happens to be a masterful musician.” Elissa Barnard of The Chronicle Herald calls the show “an outrageous theatrical adventure into the red-lit underbelly of sex, violence, Greek myth and regret,” adding that it is “an experience not to be missed.”
