January 22nd to 24th 2015 The Woodsworth Performing Arts Collective (WolfPAC) are proud to present The Miser, a translation of Molière’s L’Avare by Charles Heron Wall. Directed by Brian De La Franier, The miser is taking place in the Luella Massey Studio Theatre at the University of Toronto. Studio Theatre is located at 4 Glen Morris St., Toronto, with an 8:00 PM performance each night.
This classical work was first performed in 1668, and is based on the Latin comedy Aulularia by Plautus. With this new student production the setting will be brought into the 19th century, while retaining the text as translated.
Don’t you know The Miser? If not here’s what’s going on. Cléante and Élise, brother and sister, have each found the loves’ of their lives, but their miserly old father Harpagon has other plans for them. Arranging a marriage between Élise and a rich old suitor for his profit, and intending to marry the woman to whom Cléante is in love, it seems this pair has no hope of being with the ones they love. But if you think the two of them are just going to sit by and let their father ruin their lives you’ve got another thing coming. The pair have one and the help of their friends, both old and new, to ruin their father’s plans and win the right to marry their loves.
This comedy is full of slapstick comedy, great characters, and a story that still resonates with lovestruck people today. This production aims to bring all of those strengths front and center with a wonderful cast who has embraced not only their characters, but the wide humour that Molière has written into every scene of this wonderful classic.
