A moving and vital adaptation of Kerry Kennedy’s book, this chamber production of Ariel Dorfman’s play details the true stories of a variety of human rights defenders. Maxim Basu and Jacqueline Siu codirect a show which is international in scope but which uses inventive, minimalist staging to illuminate these subjects’ engagement with injustice in a manner that is intimate, provocative, and ultimately hopeful. A WINDS production, it will play this November 57th at Kruger Hall, University of Toronto [119 St. George Street].
As part of this production’s radically minimalist engagement with the dramatic form, traditional notions of ‘roles’ have been obliterated. Instead, the cast have all been given equal voices through which these stories are told. The show features the performing talents of (in alphabetical order): Nicole Bell, Lily Che, Katy Czajkowski, Mégane Degousée, Büke Erkoç, Melissa Fearon, Armon Ghaeinizadeh, Anna Halvorsen, Krystyna Hunt, Shane Kennedy, Konstantin Knezic, Alevtina Lapiy, Audrey Lee, Aleksandra Maslennikova, Yasmin Mostafa, Quang NgoTrong, Veronika Ressina, Nikki Sampson, Maher Sinno and Danielle Thompson.
Speak Truth to Power: Voices from Beyond the Dark is stage managed by Nisha Malhotra and Assistant Stage Managed by Sila Elgin. Maxim Basu acts as the dramaturg with Jacqueline Siu as the movement consultant. The Production Manager is Shak Haq who is also the Associate Director for this production.
