October 2, 2015. Toronto ON. After a sell-out run at the 2014 Toronto Fringe, good old neon is thrilled to announce the remount of their controversial production of Potosí. Potosí will be the first of four plays presented as part of good old neon’s inaugural 2015/2016 season. Written and directed by Alexander Offord, the production will be presented with a re-worked script in the intimate Studio 109 at Artscape Youngplace.
The story follows a young emissary from a Canadian mining corporation sent to a remote country to investigate reports of sexual violence at the mine. As ethnic civil war breaks out, she is taken hostage at gunpoint by a former miner. A psychological game of cat-and-mouse ensues in this darkly funny parable on colonialism, gender, and greed.
The play will bring together the original cast, featuring Sean Sullivan (Wayne’s World, Back to the Future III – as well as his own international hit Fringe show; Baby Redboots Revenge), Montreal based Craig Thomas (NYPD Blues, Seinfeld, ER), and Nicole Wilson (Mixed Company’s Mixed Messages, Precisely Peters’ Brimstone and Treacle, and Hart House’s The Importance of Being Earnest). Director Alexander Offord returns, having recently directed Rarerly Pure Theatre’s Half a League and Aim for the Tangent’s Mature Young Adults.
Additionally, in lieu of the controversy around the play’s original production, good old neon invites the audience to join in a discussion after each performance with writer/director Alexander Offord and the cast of Potosí. This forum is meant to be a place for the audience to connect with the artists and examine the themes within the play, and why, for some, they are unsettling.
