David Mamet's first play, Lakeboat, is the great playwright's remembrance of one summer working on a great lakes steel freighter in the early 70s. Written at the tender young age of 22, the play hints at the themes that he would come to be obsessed with in his later masterpieces. It is a poignant and funny take on the lives of men who work, touching on themes of masculinity, fathers and sons, growing up and growing old. Mamet's trademark muscular prose alternates between the crass and the touching and serves up a fantastic slice of life that is both funny and poignant.
