Join Toronto Masque Theatre Artistic Director Larry Beckwith and special guests as we look at the masque works of the English poet and playwright Ben Jonson (1572-1637) and explore the masque tradition as it existed during the Jacobean era.
The salon represents the start of Toronto Masque Theatre’s journey into the works of this great master of the masque form. Jonson was a favourite at the court of James I, where he created – along with many brilliant collaborators – close to three dozen masques; events that combined dance, poetry, theatre and music, along with lavish scenery and costumes. The salon is an opportunity to introduce audiences to the story of Jonson’s life – a life full of controversy and intrigue – and the remarkable scope of his masques, from the ingenious Masque of Blackness of 1605 to Love’s Welcome at Bolsover thirty years later.
The evening will feature dramatic and musical excerpts from Jonson works as performed by Larry Beckwith, speaker, tenor and violin, Derek Boyes, actor, and Katherine Hill, soprano and viola da gamba. Hosted and sponsored by TMT patrons Walter and Marina Unger, the evening will include snacks, tea, coffee, and a cash bar.
University Outreach
Building on our recent pilot work of involving students in the life of our company, we’re delighted to announce a full program of outreach for university and post-secondary students studying in the GTA. Students with valid identification will be invited to attend, for free, our two salons as well as open dress rehearsals for our mainstage shows. In addition, we’ll be encouraging interested students to work with us behind the scenes. More information on our outreach program, which kicks off with the Ben Jonson salon, is available online.
