Following explosions, a member of an anarchist cell is released from jail. She escapes to the seaside pursued by her family and lovers. What has she done? Is she a terrorist or a revolutionary?
Objections to Sex and Violence, a rarely produced early work by Caryl Churchill, premiered in 1975 in the wake of a wave of guerilla actions by militants across Europe and North America. Following the tracks of Jule, a female anarchist, it struggles with contemporary questions about feminism, sexual politics, and social change.
The Sex and Violence Collective brings together some of independent theatre’s most compelling artists, including members of award-winning Praxis Theatre and FeverGraph, for the inaugural theatre performance at the brand new Artscape Sandbox, a 6000 sq foot venue in the heart of the Entertainment District.
This piece smashes together members of one of Toronto’s most important political theatre companies, Praxis, with the cutting-edge physical, female driven company, Fevergraph. The fusion of these companies to create this play results in a cutting, interpretive dissection of Churchill’s unknown gem. The result is a work just as relevant today as when Churchill first wrote it 40 years ago. Don’t miss these innovative artists come together create the first show in an important new performance space.
About Praxis: “there was hardly a theatre company more vocal, inventive, and relevant than Praxis... Not to mention the fact that their shows.. .demonstrated creativity and political awareness that few others matched.”- Torontoist
