Toronto-based opera and interdisciplinary new classical music collective, FAWN Chamber Creative, is scheduled to present the world premiere of a stunning new Canadian one-act chamber opera, l’homme et le ciel by Adam Scime with a libretto by Ian Koiter. The 45-minute opera is scored for a six-piece ensemble, three-singer cast and live electronics. The performance will be a co-presentation with The Music Gallery on December 3 and 4, 2015 as part of their 40th anniversary season.
l’homme et le ciel has been carefully adapted from an ancient text called The Shephard of Hermas. The opera follows a series of inescapable visions, resulting from what Hermas believes to be merely innocent thoughts. Later, they are revealed actually to be suppressed, yet undeniable, sexual impulses. l’homme et le cielfeatures an all-Canadian cast and production team. The opera will be performed by some of the most exciting singers in Toronto, including Alex Dobson (baritone) playing Hermas, Larissa Koniuk (soprano) playing Rhoda and Adanya Dunn (soprano) playing The Messenger.
l’homme et le ciel answers the call for fresh, new Canadian opera repertoire. FAWN’s Founding Artistic Director and stage director the opera, Amanda Smith, states, “l’homme et le ciel is a significant contribution to a new movement in opera; one that leads us toward affordable chamber work, and allows us to view opera as theatre and art. This event will not only be for avid operagoers but for anyone with a hint of musical adventure and curiosity.”
On Friday night, TOKKA, a band featuring local DJ, BSMNT, and electronic violist, Dr. Draw, will be playing a live set after the show. The atmosphere at all FAWN Chamber Creative events is one of collective interests, allowing people from a variety of circles to come together and discover something completely new with each other.
