Stage Door News
We are living during incredible and terrifying times: millions of people are on the move, bombs are being detonated in places near and far, and our hearts are being broken every single day. We mourn for the victims in the many places currently under siege. We also worry deeply about the safety and health of the children and their families who we worked with in the wonderful Brussels neighbourhood of Molenbeek. Mammalian remains utterly convinced that generosity and abundance will prevail, and we will do whatever we possibly can to make this happen.
Millionen! Millionen! Millionen! at the Ruhrtriennale, Germany
The 2015 Ruhrtriennale Festival's leitmotif was seid umschlungen ("be embraced") from Schiller's Ode to Joy, the EU anthem - the next lyrics being: you millions. So we brought together millions of teenagers (well, 40): German-born, refugees and recent immigrants, and we went camping, posing the research question: will we find embrace? Millionen! Millionen! Millionen! presented our findings in a multi-lingual, multi-selfie performance. Not only did we find embrace, but after all the bows were done, we found a GROOVE (check the first video). Led by Darren O'Donnell, Jana Eiting, Jenna Winter and Konstantin Bock, with Eva Verity dropping by and sliding into the groove.
The Hemsbach Protocol - Research Phase
In August, Darren and Tenzin Chozin spent a month living in Luisenhof, a refugee holding facility in the town of Hemsbach, Germany, in a research phase for The Hemsbach Protocol, a project about social integration and love during times of crisis. It was well beyond good times. Jana Eiting and Marina Stefan were also there, though they were denied the pleasure of living at Luisenfhof. Developed in collaboration with Metropolregion Rhein-Neckar.
Homecooked Hemsbach
As the kick-off for The Hemsbach Protocol, we organized a cooking contest with teams comprised of refugees and local Germans, who had to deal with a confusing array of unidentified international ingredients. The project was conceived by Rene Korbel, impeccably produced by Jana Eiting, with Konstantin Bock joining us to make things look pretty and co-host the evening with Jana and Darren.
Darren and Chozin in Conversation with Doug Saunders at the Goethe Institute, Toronto
Darren and Chozin were in conversation with Globe and Mail international correspondent Doug Saunders about The Hemsbach Protocol at the Goethe Institute this past October. Watch the video. Thanks to Jutta Brendemuhl for making it happen.
The Hemsbach Protocol at the Pfalzbau
We will be back in Hemsbach in late February to continue our work in collaboration with refugees and the Mayor's Office of Hemsbach, presented by the Metropolregion Rhein-Neckar, and the Rhein-Neckar Kreis. We will be presenting a preview at the Theater im Pflazbau, the state theatre of Ludwigshafen, at their Open World festival.
