Toronto, ON- This January Cue6 Theatre will play host to an international conversation about race-relations, marriage and fidelity, love and forgiveness, when it premieres Byhalia, Mississippi as a part of a unique “World Premiere Conversation”. The production is making its debut simultaneously in Toronto, Chicago IL (The New Colony and Definition Theatre Company), Memphis TN (Playhouse on the Square), and Charleston SC (Village Rep Co.), followed by staged readings in Birmingham AL (Theatre Downtown), Boulder CO (square product theatre), and Los Angeles CA (Sixth Avenue) the following week. On January 18th, this unique event culminates with an online talkback connecting artists and audiences from all seven cities.
Jim and Laurel Parker anxiously await the birth of their first child. The due date passes and when the baby finally arrives, the couple is faced with the biggest challenge of their lives: Laurel has given birth to a black baby boy, the result of an affair the previous year. The lives of their family and friends are thrown into turmoil in Byhalia, Mississippi, a town with a racially-charged past that still simmers close to the surface.
Cue6’s Toronto production features Dora winner Claire Armstrong, Orphan Black star and two-time Dora nominee Kyra Harper, Dora nominee Virgilia Griffith, former Degrassi: The Next Generation star Mazin Elsadig and indie theatre mainstay Joshua Browne.
Byhalia, Mississippi is the 2015 winner of the NewWorks@The Works Playwriting Competition at Playhouse on the Square in Memphis TN, and has been short-listed for numerous awards including the Theatre503 Playwriting award.
