Eight years ago, Kelly Handerek, a former artistic director with The Grand Theatre, sat down to write the story of his early life growing up in Medicine Hat, Alberta. The Grand is proud to present Small Boy Dreams in The McManus Studio Theatre as part of the UnderGrand Series.
Small Boy Dreams is a biographic one-man play about a young boy growing up in a small community. The boy knows he is different and seeks to find his place in life through curiosity, friendship, dreams, and imagination. Small Boy Dreams features performer Kent Evans, and is written and directed by Kelly Handerek. The London presentation is part of an international tour that will travel across Canada and to the UK.
"The acting is absolutely spellbinding and Evans is able to capture the essence of the play. To capture the personal narrative of a man this well is quite a dramatic feat, one that he should be commended for." - The Carillon
"An honest and humorous exploration of friendships, career paths, love... Evans has a great emotional range for the demanding role." - The Leader-Post
The Small Boy Dreams company is independent and self-producing, organized by Kelly Handerek. Handerek is an actor, singer, director, playwright, adjudicator, and Professor of Theatre at the University of Regina, as well as a former Artistic Director of The Grand Theatre. His work has been seen here in London and across the country at the National Arts Centre, The Banff Festival, and throughout many universities.
