Toronto, ON – Outside the March today announced tickets are on sale for the Toronto premiere of Mr. Burns: A Post-Electric Play by Anne Washburn with music by Michael Friedman, in association with Starvox Entertainment and Crow’s Theatre. As of May 9, Mr. Burns takes over Toronto’s historic Aztec Theatre (1035 Gerrard St. E) for a multi-disciplinary production inspired by the world’s favourite TV family, “The Simpsons”. The show combines theatre, television, music, dance, puppetry and Outside the March’s signature immersive style to a one-of-a-kind experience that will have audiences yelling “Woo Hoo!”
Outside the March is the immersive company behind such award-winning smash hits as Vitals, Mr. Marmalade and Terminus. In Mr. Burns, audiences are invited into a post-apocalyptic world devoid of electricity, where a small group of survivors band together in search of food, shelter and the most precious resource of all: classic lines from “The Simpsons”. In order to bring the audience deeper into the world of the show, the performance will be unplugged and off-the-gird; staged entirely without the use of electricity.
“On previous productions we’ve invited our audiences to inhabit a kindergarten classroom, or venture out on an EMS call – now we’re inviting them to immerse themselves in the apocalypse, with Homer, Bart, Marge and Lisa as their guides,” said OtM co-artistic director Mitchell Cushman.
“Audience members will be able to join in on the action, wielding flashlights to help light our off-the-grid experience,” adds OtM co-artistic director Simon Bloom. “For our patrons sitting in the front rows, we’re offering the chance to kick back and watch the collapse of civilization from the comfort of a rec room sofa.”
We’re thrilled to be collaborating with leading Canadian companies Starvox and Crow’s,” notes Cushman “to bring this larger-than-life experience to the east end of Toronto.”
Part pop musical, part chilling contemporary allegory, and part “Simpsons” celebration, Mr. Burns is an animated exploration of how the pop culture of one era evolves into the mythology of another, sprinkled with just enough nostalgia to guarantee things go nuclear!
The show reunites many of the cast of Outside the March's critically acclaimed production, Mr. Marmalade (winner of the 2013 Dora Award for Outstanding Independent Production). Mr. Burns is co-directed by Bloom and Cushman, and stars such Toronto fan favourites as: Damien Atkins (London Road; Angels in America), Rielle Braid (Ride the Cyclone), Ishai Buchbinder (Mr. Marmalade), Katherine Cullen (Vitals; Mr. Marmalade), Colin Doyle (Sultans of the Street; Disney’s Fangbone), Sebastien Heins (Brotherhood, the Hip Hopera), Amy Keating (Mr. Marmalade; After Miss Julie) and Tracy Michailidis (The Light in the Piazza; Broadway’s Beauty and the Beast).
