TORONTO, ON (Mar. 3, 2015) – The artistic directors and board of directors of hub14 art and performance works are proud to announce this 2014-2015 season marks the 10th anniversaryof the studio’s founding. "Hub14 is a unique downtown studio space for art and community," says Helen Yung, board member. "One of hub14's most unique accomplishments is that it is 100% self-sustaining; in the 10 years of hub14's existence, the organization has never applied nor received any operating or capital grants to support the organization or the studio space. Hub14 is maintained by love, membership, barter/trade, and community rentals."
To celebrate a decade of supporting independent art and performance, hub14 will be presenting a crowdsourced photo exhibition April 24, 25 and 26, 2015. The HUB14 Retrospective will showcase photos of the many artists, community groups, ideas, initiatives and performances that have lived at one time or another in hub14’s 700 square feet off Queen West.
This is a call to anyone who has ever rented, rehearsed, taught, conducted meetings, held a séance, performed, auditioned, trained, been in residence, organized, volunteered or otherwise occupied hub14’s studio in some way, shape or form sometime in the past 10 years: we invite you to submit an image to be included in the exhibition. Send us a photo of a show you dreamed up while rehearsing at hub14. Show us the outcome of a meeting you held at hub14. Share with us - with the world - a peek inside your class.
Located at 14 Markham Street, hub14 has evolved quickly over the last 10 years - growing from a small co-op space shared between a handful of young, emerging artists to become an established community space for incubating community cultural endeavours and developing local and international independent artists. "It's been a vibrant, adventure-filled decade," says co-artistic director Andrew Gaboury.
Since 2004, over 1000 artists, teachers and community members have used hub14 as their creative centre for a variety of forms including dance, theatre, film, visual arts and other interdisciplinary experiments. Since incorporating in 2009, hub has given away 2000 FREE and subsidized studio hours to support artistic and community activities, as well as swapped nearly 4000 studio hours for volunteer work.
Highlights of the organization’s yearly programming include its local, national and international residencies supporting proposed projects focused on research, incubation, co-presentation, community initiatives and Live-in experiences.
Long time partners with The SummerWorks Performance Festival, The Rhubarb Festival, and the Toronto Dance Community Love-In, to name a few, hub14 is continually making new connections with local presenters.
Save the date! Plans are in the works for an opening reception to the HUB14 Retrospective on April 24, 2015. The general public and distinguished guests will be invited to the exhibition and reception. Photos will be exhibited at hub14, at 14 Markham Street, on April 24, 25 & 26, 2015. It will be beautiful; it will be fun; it will be deeply meaningful for us to celebrate 10 years with you.
