GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS: a modern parable of desperation, rhetoric, rage, betrayal, and… estrogen? Jet Girls’ all-star new production dares to reimagine David Mamet’s edgy testosterone-fuelled satire with an all-female cast – because greed and ambition are not gender specific. GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS plays April 15 - 26, 2015 at the Red Sandcastle Theatre. Tickets are available via 416-845-9411, www.redsandcastletheatre.com, or at the door.
Julie Brar and Marianne Sawchuk — the creative team behind Jet Girls — see this production as a chance to feature an extraordinary ensemble of female performers in a fresh take on one of the great modern classics.” I’ve always loved the characters and language of Glengarry,” says producer Julie Brar. “The themes of greed, competition and ambition are not male or female characteristics…. There is a hunger for a more diverse representation of the society we live in — all ages, races and sizes. The Hollywood ideal of size zero, Caucasian and twenty is very limiting and damaging. People want to see themselves represented — it’s how we relate to story.”
“The world of GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS can no longer be perceived as gender-specific. David Mamet says ‘the play is about a society based on business, a society with only one bottom line: How much money you make.’” Producer Marianne Sawchuk notes, “There has been a shift, especially over the last few decades, of women entering this business mentality. We are obsessed with wealth and the promise of getting something for nothing.”
Gemini-nominated actor (Gene Roddenberry’s Earth Final Conflict) and award-winning director Anita la Selva (Look Back in Anger, Fevergraph Theatre Co; snug harbor, Soulo Theatre/Toronto Fringe/Santa Fe Solo Performers Festival; A Soldier's Story, SummerWorks Festival) leads a group of remarkable performers in this all female-production. Shaw festival veteran Elizabeth Saunders plays ‘Levine’ (Orphan Black; Stopheart, Factory theatre; In the Next Room or The Vibrator Play, Tarragon Theatre; 4:48 Psychosis, Aether of Us). Julie Brar plays ‘Williamson’ (Beauty and the Beast, Take 5 Productions; The Very Very Girl, Gayatri Theatre; Lost Girl, Prodigy Pictures). Francoise Balthazar plays ‘Moss’ (Julius Caesar (all female), 16 Endean; Bella Donna, Some Strange Reason; Richard 3, Queens 4: The deadly game, Vagabond Knight). Laurel Paetz plays ‘Aaronow’ (Lennox, Gentlewoman, Shakespeare in Action; Nurse, Shakespeare in Action; Yana, SummerWorks). Marianne Sawchuk plays ‘Roma’ (Indie feature: All I Ever Wanted (currently in post-production in Los Angeles); Angel Academy, Next Stage Theatre/Hollywood; Producer: Acts on the Edge, first one act festival at Edgemar Center for the Arts, Santa Monica, California). Red Sandcastle Artistic Director Rosemary Doyle plays ‘Lingk’ (Beauty Queen of Leenane, Connemara Collective; Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolfe, Red Sandcastle; My Mother's Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding, Mirvish/Fringe Winnipeg). Robinne Fanfair plays ‘Baylen’ (Dear Viola, Lifetime/Entertainment One; Bomb Girls, Global Television; Rookie Blue, Entertainment One). Stage Managed by Lisa Sciannella, with Photography and Graphic Design by Emanuel Pires. Costumes by Jan Venus.
Jet Girls was created in 2015 to produce theatre and film projects featuring women and diversity across a wide variety of ages. GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS is their first project.
