TORONTO — After mounting what The Globe and Mail called “a bracing wake-up call to the spirit” last December with #UncleJohn, Against the Grain Theatre (AtG) returns with Death & Desire, a hot double-bill of two of the most compelling song cycles ever written: Franz Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin and Olivier Messiaen’s Harawi. Tickets ranging from $35 to $70 are now on sale at www.againstthegraintheatre.com.
Featuring two of Canada’s most engaging soloists, mezzo-soprano Krisztina Szabó and bass-baritone Stephen Hegedus, Death & Desire promises an intimate and intriguing encounter with art song that leaves convention on the sidewalk and steams up the windows inside. The creative team includes AtG Artistic Director Joel Ivany, whose evocative staging of the two song cycles promises to enthrall; AtG Music Director Topher Mokrzewski, who fearlessly tackles the famously difficult piano accompaniment of both pieces; AtG Resident Lighting Designer Jason Hand; and set and costume designer Michael Gianfrancesco. The production runs from June 2 to 5, 2015 at 8pm and takes place in Toronto’s Neubacher Shor Contemporary, a fixture on Queen West and one of Canada’s leading and most influential contemporary art galleries.
A special preview of Death & Desire will be offered on May 21, 2015 at 12pm as part of the Free Concert Series in the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. Details about the series may be found here.
