You're looking for a hilarious night out. But you also love a touch of class. You've found it in Harvey, the Pulitzer Prize winning classic of mid-20th century American theatre, first produced in 1944 when it ran for 1,775 performances. It has been a favourite with audiences ever since. It was last seen on Broadway in 2012 and a new production (described as "utterly infectious" by the Birmingham Mail) is currently running in London’s West End.
Mild mannered, middle-aged Elwood P. Dowd is convinced that his best friend is a six-foot plus rabbit called Harvey. Being a friendly and affable chap, Elwood introduces his rabbit friend to everyone he meets. His sister Veta, a social climber, is increasingly embarrassed by her brother's behaviour and decides to have him committed to a sanitarium to save her and her equally snobbish daughter from further humiliation. Things soon start to go wrong when Dr. Sanderson, the psychiatrist, commits Veta instead of Elwood. When the truth finally emerges the chase is on! Will they capture Elwood and his invisible companion? Elwood eventually rolls up at the asylum looking for Harvey, who he's lost in the interim. He's about to be given a special injection to bring him back to normal when... Well, we don't want to spoil the story for you. Let's just say the whole thing is a brilliant comedy of errors and the ending is satisfyingly unexpected.
Be sure not to miss this classic comedy treat!
"Mary Chase’s Pulitzer-winning 1944 comedy is a delectable mid-century chestnut with an idiosyncratic personality that still sparkles." ~ Hollywood Reporter
