Blyth, Ontario... In the run-up to its summer season, five different couples from the community are taking to the stage of Blyth Memorial Hall as the Blyth Festival presents Love Letters by A.R. Gurney between April 25 and May 2, directed by John McHenry. Tickets are just $25 each and may be purchased by calling 519.523.9300, Toll Free 1.877.862.5984 or online at blythfestival.com.
Love Letters is a unique and imaginative theatre piece comprised of letters exchanged over a lifetime between two people who grew up together, went their separate ways, but continued to share confidences. As the actors read the letters aloud, what is created is an evocative, touching, frequently funny but always telling pair of character studies in which what is implied is as revealing and meaningful as what is actually written down.
Each of the five couples is playing for one performance only. Opening the run on Saturday, April 25 at 8pm is Classic Rock/CKNX radio morning man Phil Main and Jodi Kuran, vice principal of St. Anne's Secondary School. They are followed by retired Avon Maitland School Board teachers Bruce and Marg Whitmore on Sunday, April 26 at 2pm. Shawn Van Osch, who has just finished a hilarious run of Unnecessary Farce at the Livery Theatre in Goderich, and area actor and teacher Lisa Hood will take to the stage on Thursday, April 30 at 8pm followed by Goderich lawyer Quinn Ross and Lisa Hood (again) on Friday, May 1 at 8pm. Closing the run are well-known Blyth residents Duncan and Lynda McGregor on Saturday, May 2 at 8pm.
"Love Letters is a lovely theatre piece," says McHenry. "There's no elaborate set or special effects, the focus is on the words; it's heart-warming, poignant, and funny."
The setting is designed by Ann Webster with lighting designed by Jacob Crosby.
Blyth Festival's 2015 summer season begins June 24. Season passes are available until April 30 at significant savings over single ticket prices and may be purchased by calling 519.523.9300, Toll Free 1.877.862.5984 or online at blythfestival.com.
