Toronto, ON – Canadian Stage is proud to announce that Requiem, directed by artistic & general director Matthew Jocelyn, was voted as the Best Production of the Argentine 2014 opera season by the Argentine Music Critics Association (ACMA). A major opera project presented at the acclaimed Teatro Colón in June 2014, Requiem was a significant project for Jocelyn who wrote the libretto in addition to directing. The ACMA award ceremony takes place Apr. 17 at the Buenos Aires Legislature.
“It's hard to imagine images more perfect than those created by director Matthew Jocelyn, with sets by Anick La Bissonière and Eric-Oliver Lacroix: tension-filled interiors, with pure yet enigmatic lines, threatened by fatal, haunted surroundings.” – Federico Monjeau, Clarín
Commissioned by Teatro Colón and composed by Oscar Strasnoy, Requiem is based on the novel Requiem for a Nun by William Faulkner. This production was Jocelyn’s second collaboration with Strasnoy, having worked together on Le Bal for Hamburgische Staatsoper, one of Germany’s leading opera companies.
Jocelyn’s next opera project is the upcoming production of Julie, part of Canadian Stage’s 15.16 season. A chamber opera by Belgian composer Philippe Boesmans and directed by Jocelyn, the production is Canadian Stage’s first opera presentation and their first time collaborating with contemporary music company Soundstreams.
On stage from Nov. 17 to 29 at the Bluma Appel Theatre (27 Front St. E.), Julie will feature an all-Canadian cast and is presented in association with Soundstreams with support from the Théâtre d’Orléans, France. Tickets from $24 to $99 are available online, by phone at 416.368.3110 or in person at the box office. For details visit canadianstage.com.
