Toronto, ON – ‘Live from the Annex’ officially opens on Tuesday, May 5, 8 p.m. – 10 p.m. This first show of the cabaret broadcast series will feature guest artists Colin Sharpe (comic artist), The Templeton Philharmonic (sketch troupe), Doctor Ew (singer-songwriter) and Brunswick Stew (host improv troupe). The comedy cabaret series takes place in The Garage, a flexible event space at the Centre for Social Innovation - Annex location, 720 Bathurst Street, Toronto. $15 tickets for the May 5th official opening are available on a first-come, first-serve basis at livefromtheannex@gmail.com. Follow on Twitter and Facebook. For information, call (416) 619-4621 or visit www.livefromtheannex.com. The comedy and music show is broadcast live to the world-wide web via dailymotion.com/YouAndMedia.
‘Live from the Annex’ co-producers Sasha Wentges (Mea Culpa Productions), Laurie Murphy (MARRAM) and Brian G. Smith (Annex Improv) are excited to present some of Toronto's top calibre comedy and music artists in their live-simulcast monthly series. Thrilled to be part of the official opening night of the Cabaret Broadcast Series is sketch comedy duo The Templeton Philharmonic. “The Centre for Social Innovation is an incredible organization, and we're excited that it's the venue for ‘Live from the Annex.’ We hope the show ends up being a fixture in the Annex live music and comedy scenes,” say Toronto comediennes Gwynne Phillips and Briana Templeton.
The Templeton Philharmonic troupe was voted "Best Duo” (L.A. Comedy Festival) and "Producer's Pick" (Toronto Sketchfest). Quirky, surreal, and tongue-in-cheek interpretive dance sequences are their trademarks (web series ’Womanish’ on CBC Punchline!). Joining them is musician Doctor Ew, also known as Drew Smith, a member of pop band ‘The Bicycles’. He has released one album under the Doctor Ew moniker. Also performing is comic artist Colin Sharpe. A graduate of the Second City Conservatory and York University Creative Writing programs, Sharpe performs in the sketch and improv Toronto scene with ‘The Weaker Vessels’ and SoCap Theatre’s teams, ‘Die La Mode’ and ‘Improvinator’.
Rounding out the program is Brunswick Stew, Annex Improv’s performance ensemble, taught by acclaimed actor and instructor Lisa Merchant. On May 5, Annex Improv’s Brian G. Smith offers both students and audience alike a live Improv lesson in a ground-breaking ‘visible classroom’ with performers Brittney Drysdale, Noah Goldstein, Tony Lee, Steve Lyon, Laurie Murphy, David Perlman, Denise Pinto, Kelli Thompson, Ricky Singh, Sasha Wentges and Paul Wensley. The unscripted, spontaneous storytelling will be occasionally paused while Smith points out some finer details of the students’ creative process in front of both the studio and online audience.
‘Live from the Annex’ shows will take place the first Tuesday of the month (May 5; June 2; July 7; August 4; September 1; October 6; November 3; and, December 1, 2015); doors open at 7:30 p.m., with curtain at 8 p.m. There is a brief intermission. The space is wheelchair accessible.
