TORONTO, April 7, 2015 - In what has already been a showcase year for Show Choir Canada, the 5th annual Show Choir Canada Championships (previously National Championships) and Show Choir Canada Junior Championships (previously Junior/Middle School Invitational) return to Toronto on April 10 and 11, 2015 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Both events will be hosted by The Family Channel's "The Next Step" star and "So You Think You Can Dance Canada" winner Jordan Clark.
2015 marks Show Choir Canada's fifth anniversary, and has been celebrated by a sleek redesign and rebranding of the organization, as well as a 2015 Canadian Screen Award win for "Best Biography or Arts Documentary Program or Series" for the highly successful TVO documentary "UNSUNG: Behind The Glee," featuring Show Choir Canada.
"2015 is shaping up to be a banner year for Show Choir Canada," said George Randolph, Co-Founder and Executive Producer. "We are not only celebrating our fifth anniversary, but we kicked off the year with an incredible Canadian Screen Award win - demonstrating how show choir clearly captures the imagination of participants and audiences alike both on screen or live in person
at our events."
New for this year, the Show Choir Canada Championships have expanded to welcome community groups of high-school aged performers, who for the first time will have the opportunity to perform and compete alongside Arts schools in a newly formed and expanded "Arts School/Community" choir division. Other returning Championship divisions include: Non-Arts, Large Ensemble and Small Ensemble.
In the only international event of its kind, thirteen of Canada's best new and returning show choirs, and two new show choirs from the United States, will make the event intercontinental. These performers will vie for more than $10,000 in prizing from Yamaha Canada Music, individual scholarships to the Randolph Academy for the Performing Arts and most importantly, the prestigious title and bragging rights of "2015 Show Choir Canada Champions" in a one-chance to win Championship.
"With each Show Choir Canada champion crowned over the last four years, national and international interest has grown exponentially, and each year the stakes are raised higher and higher," said Peter da Costa, Co-Founder and Executive Producer. "Our Championships have grown into so much more than just a competition, and Show Choir Canada is proud to continue to be able to provide our performers with not only a professional performance experience, but also an invaluable exercise in character building and teamwork that lasts long after their bows."
Named "Canada's favourite dancer" as final season winner of "So You Think You Can Dance Canada," Jordan Clark star of The Family Channel's "The Next Step" returns to host, following a sold-out, cross Canada live-performance tour of the hit TV show now in it's third season.
As in past years, a judging panel consisting of top industry experts from across North America and Europe will assess the competitors, with awards and prizes given for the top choirs and bands, as well as recognition for individual performers.
Also returning for the fourth year will be the Show Choir Canada Junior Championship, where seven show choirs from Grades 4- 8 - the future of the performing arts - will take to the stage. Juniors will perform and compete in front of adjudicators, and receive valuable feedback with prizing and scholarship opportunities, in the evening of April 10, 2015 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.
