(Charlottetown, P.E.I.) – The 2015 Charlottetown Festival has announced the addition of Canadian stage and screen actor Bruce Dow to the company. The Vancouver native will play ‘Humpty Dumpty’ in Lewis Carroll’s literary sequel to Alice in Wonderland, as well as ‘Cecil the Farmer’ in the 51st edition of Anne of Green Gables—The Musical™.
"Bruce Dow brings a beautiful vulnerability to every role. He is a tour de force performer that we are very blessed to have at our festival,” said Artistic Director, Adam Brazier. “Bruce's success internationally, on Broadway, and throughout Canada is matched only by his endearing heart and commitment to the craft."
Known for his soaring voice and comedic timing, Dow appeared on Broadway in Jesus Christ Superstar, Jane Eyre, and The Music Man, among others, and spent 12 seasons in leading roles at the Stratford Festival. Dubbed a “national treasure” by The Toronto Star, he has won two Dora Mavor Moore Awards for his stage work, while also appearing on TV’sThe Rick Mercer Report and Murdoch Mysteries.
“It’s a new day in Charlottetown -- and I get to be there. I’m so grateful to Adam and the people of Charlottetown for the invitation!” he stated. “I’ve never been further east than Quebec City; I’m a West Coast boy at heart. But I can’t wait to smell the sea again, after all these years, land-and-lake-locked in Ontario.”
Dow is also excited to be a guest instructor with the Confederation Centre Young Company, and spoke about the Festival’s opportunity to become a national hub for Canadian theatre. “I firmly believe, under Adam’s ‘captain-ship’, the Festival is on the verge of reestablishing itself as the mid-wife for new Canadian musicals – a place where we can embrace this great art form and make it our own,” he continued. “Through the decades, the people here, and all those casts and crews of Anne…™ have kept that dream alive – but with Evangeline, and other new works in development, I firmly believe the country will look east for new inspiration.”
Alice Through the Looking-Glass previews June 24 and plays select dates through August 29.
