On Sunday, May 24 at 2:00 pm, as part of Toronto’s annual Doors Open event, students of Opera Atelier’s School of Atelier Ballet will present a special performance called Dance Through Time.
The public is invited to attend this free event, which will feature students in period costume performing historical dances ranging from Renaissance to Baroque, plus 19th Century Mazurkas, Tarantellas and excerpts from the Romantic ballet, choreographed by Opera Atelier’s founding co-artistic director Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg. The program will also include a contemporary piece choreographed by guest artist Lukas Malkowski. Opera Atelier’s founding co-artistic director Marshall Pynkoski will provide educational and entertaining commentary.
Performances will take place in the Great Hall on the third floor of St. Lawrence Hall, 157 King Street East, an authentically reproduced room featuring a huge gas-lit chandelier, an elaborate ornamental plaster ceiling, red plush furnishings and fine paintings. Built in 1850 to be Toronto’s public meeting space, the Hall was the centre of Toronto’s cultural and social life for decades. After years of neglect, it was restored in 1967 as a centennial project and is now home to the administrative offices and dance school of Opera Atelier.
