World Premiere THE ATOMIC TRADITION by Istvan Dugalin Early one morning, Bella is disturbed and can’t sleep. She begins an odd, pseudo- intellectual conversation with her lover, Angie. We discover the tensions that exist in their relationship because of an imbalance of perceived power and a recent change in their dynamic. Their chat seems, at first, trivial, but it quickly escalates. As it erupts into violence, the two women discover how quickly civilization can fall apart and how desperately they must cling to each other for survival.
Having quickly established themselves in the Toronto independent theatre community over the past two years Sterling’s powerhouse couple, Sophie Ann Rooney & Kyle Labine will direct The Atomic Tradition (Rooney) and Canis Familiaris (Labine). Labine is known for being the sweet Davey Keith on Canadian classic Road to Avonlea, having worked in the TV/film industry for over 25 years starring in cult classics like Goosebumps-Monster Blood, Freddy vs Jason, Halloween Resurrection and Samurai Girl. For Sterling, Labine built the old theatre from the ground-up and directed the critically acclaimed Specter , Becky Shaw and Jane Ford’s The Foursome. Founding Artistic Director Sophie Ann Rooney is the spark that started this wild journey, one of Toronto’s Top Acting Coaches, she has produced 34 shows for Sterling in 2 and half years – showcasing the work of 117 Torontonian artists. Her work as director has always been sensational and daring : MacBeth, Burn This, Ravenscroft, The Glory of Living, Interior: Panic, Snow Angel, A Lonely Impulse of Delight, Cowboy Mouth, Danny and the Deep Blue Sea.
An exciting cast joins Labine and Rooney for this Double Bill: Olunike Adeliyi Lady M in Sterling’s MacBeth, Her2 (Soulpepper), Flashpoint. Alana Pancyr Ravenscroft, Speak Now, Prymid Scream. Jessica Kennedy Sailor’s Song, MacBeth, Republic of Doyle, Blue Mountain State, Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World.
