Actor Graham Greene of Stratford was one of 100 new appointees to the Order of Canada officially announced on Canada Day Wednesday.
The 63-year-old Greene, whose television and film career has spanned four decades and includes a season on the Stratford Festival stage, was among 87 men and women appointed as Members of the Order of Canada, which honours outstanding contributions at the local or regional levels or in a special field of activity.
An Oneida born in Ohsweken on the Six Nations Reserve, Greene was recognized “for his achievements as a pioneering and versatile actor of the stage and screen.”
Still busy with several projects, Greene is perhaps best known for his role in the 1990 Hollywood movie Dances With Wolves, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award for best supporting actor.
He's also had roles in Twilight Saga: New Moon, The Green Mile and Die Hard With A Vengeance, among other Hollywood productions.
Last year, Greene was honoured with a Dreamcatcher Charitable Foundation’s lifetime achievement award, and before that, he received the Earle Grey Award for lifetime achievement at the Canadian television industry's Gemini Awards in 2004. He won a Gemini in 1994 for best performance in a children's or youth program for his role in The Adventures of Dudley the Dragon.
Locally, he was in a community theatre production of A Wind in the Willows Christmas in December 2014. In 2007, he played Shylock in the Stratford Festival’s production of The Merchant of Venice, and Lennie in Of Mice and Men.
In addition to the new members of the Order of Canada, Governor General David Johnston also named two Companions, recognizing national pre-eminence or international service or achievement, and 11 Officers, recognizing national service or achievement.
All of the appointments were made on the recommendation of the Advisory Council for the Order of Canada.
Recipients will be invited to accept their insignia at a ceremony to be held at a later date.
The Order of Canada, one of the country’s highest civilian honours, was established in 1967, during Canada’s centennial year, to recognize outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation. Over the last 45 years, more than 6,000 people from all sectors of society have been invested into the Order.
