Performing sketch comedy in the August 4 show is Sex T-Rex, an award-winning Toronto-based comedy troupe. Company member Seann Murray says Sex T-Rex is the perfect gateway drug for theatre - imaginative, fast-paced and hilarious: “We’re thrilled to give the Annex a taste of our Fringe hit 'SwordPlay: A Play Of Swords,' a whirlwind show packed with action and heart. We've been told it goes well with hummus." Sex T-Rex performs its cinematic style, wild physicality and spot-on parody for audiences across Canada and the USA. Upcoming is the troupe’s appearance at the Bad Dog Theatre Company's summer festival 'Blockbuster Week' on Tuesday, August 18th, and a re-launch of its improvised love letter to Dungeons and Dragons, 'D&D Live!' Moniquea Marion is a Toronto-based actor and comedian who's just completed a successful run at this year's Toronto Fringe Festival with ‘Mumsical,’ a one woman musical comedy about moms. A 2015 NOW Magazine Best Female Improviser nominee for 2015, and a Social Capital Theatre improv teacher, Moniquea excitedly awaits to hit the ‘Live from the Annex’ stage after a post-Fringe western Canadian sabbatical. Upcoming projects for her is a new podcast this fall and a character web series in 2016. (moniqueamarion.com)
Another Toronto audience favourite of summer festivals being showcased in the August 4 ‘Live from the Annex’ show is ‘Deadmouse: The Musical,’ a show about a mouse who wants to be a house DJ but is discriminated against for being a mouse. “Just so there’s no confusion,” says the company website, “Deadmouse the Musical is not written by Deadmau5 or endorsed by Deadmau5. It is a parody. It was written out of love of house music culture. It does not feature the music of Deadmau5. Think Ratatouille meets Book of Mormon.” (deadmousemusical.com)
Not only a cabaret series promoting Toronto comedy and music artists, ‘Live from the Annex’ also showcases the work of social innovators. On July 7, Executive Director Rob Shirkey, a Toronto-based lawyer that runs Our Horizon, a climate change non-profit at the Centre for Social Innovation, is being profiled. (http://ourhorizon.org)
Rounding out the program is Brunswick Stew, Annex Improv’s Performance Ensemble, under the direction of Brian G. Smith and teacher Lisa Merchant: Joe Amero, Matt Corluka, Tom King, Victoria Kucher, Steve Lyon, Laurie Murphy, David Perlman, Denise Pinto, Kelli Thompson and Sasha Wentges with Lee Cohen on keyboard. Joining these improvisers onstage during the show are surprise guests from the professional Improv community and audience members. (http://www.anneximprov.com/sign-up.html)
‘Live from the Annex’ shows take place the first Tuesday of the month (August 4; September 1; October 6; November 3; and, December 1, 2015); doors open at 7:30 p.m., with curtain at 8 p.m. Beer, wine and refreshments are offered for sale before, during and after intermission.
