The ninth season of Opera by Request begins on Friday September 18 with Weber's Der Freischütz, with a cast featuring a strong European component.
Canadian soprano Vanessa Lanch, currently residing in Vienna and in her third season as a member of the Bayreuth Festival chorus, sings the role of Agathe, a role she will be repeating with the Kammerphilharmonic Europa Köln in November, in performances in Bad Kreuznach and Regensburg, Germany.
Baritone John Holland, who recently sang Masetto in Mozart's Don Giovanni at the Estates Theatre in Prague (where the opera premiered) sings the role of Kaspar, and tenor Ryan Harper returns from an operatic river tour encompassing Vienna, Melk, Regensburg, Passau and Nurnberg to sing the role of Max.
Vania Chan, Jay Lambie, Steven Henrikson and Kieran Kane round out a cast which also includes Emile Belcourt, long-time resident of the English National Opera, in the speaking role of Samiel.
An upcoming highlight of the new season occurs on Saturday, October 17, with Susan Tsakaris starring as Brünnhilde in Wagner's Götterdämmerung, concluding OBR's presentation of the entire Ring Cycle. Ms Tsakaris, who stepped in to sing Brünnhilde in OBR's Siegfried as an audience member when the listed soprano lost her voice, has recently been heard as Turandot with the St. Petersburg (Florida) Opera. In September she travels to Amsterdam to cover Isolde for two performances of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde at the Concertgebouw.
Both performances are at College St. United Church, 452 College St, and tickets remain unchanged at $20.00. Der Freischütz begins at 7:30 pm, Götterdämmerung will commence at 6:30.
