Toronto (Canada)... Toronto Dance Theatre (TDT) announces the details of its 2015-2016 season, kicking off on September 29, 2015 at the Sony Centre when the company performs on a mixed program as part of the inaugural Fall For Dance North.
Under the continued artistic direction of Christopher House, TDT's 47th season features four new productions as well as its signature fundraising event, Tour de Danse. Highlights include: Echo, a new production by Christopher House inspired by his visually stunning dance-theatre work, Echo's Object (2005) (Nov 3-7); two premieres by New York-based choreographers Jeanine Durning and Joanna Kotze in the New York/Toronto Project (Feb 11-14 & 17-20); a series of ten innovative solos created by Toronto visual artists in Singular Bodies (April 14-17 & 20-23); and Marienbad, a new performance work created and performed by Christopher House and Jordan Tannahill (May 26-28 & June 1-4). Single Tickets and Passes for all three Winchester St Theatre shows are on sale now at www.tdt.org or call 416.967.1365.
"It's a season of collaborations with leading artists in other fields, a season in which everyone takes risks by bringing their skill, experience and vibrant curiosity to fresh new collaborations. Our 2015-16 speaks to the place of dance at the centre of contemporary culture and we look forward to sharing it with you,"
- Christopher House.
2015-16 SEASON
Christopher House builds on images from his "fresh and original" (The Globe and Mail) Echo's Object (2005) to create a dynamic new production called Echo in which ten dancers inhabit a world of beautiful creatures, dark angels and lost souls. With costumes by Jeremy Laing, lighting by Steve Lucas, décor by Cheryl Lalonde and sound design by Phil Strong and Thom Gill, Echo is a visually stunning work of dance theatre that looks forwards and backwards in time, drawing on vintage modern dance history.
Echo is presented as part of Harbourfront Centre's 15/16 NextSteps dance series.
New York/Toronto Project (February 11-13 & 17-20, 2016)
TDT welcomes New York choreographers Jeanine Durning and Joanna Kotze as the featured artists in TDT's fourth international collaborative venture. Following the success of Brussels/Toronto (2013), Paris/Toronto (2011), and Berlin/Toronto (2009), the New York/Toronto Project provides a rare window for Toronto on Manhattan's vibrant, influential downtown dance scene.
*The New York/Toronto Project is presented with the support of Ann H. Atkinson.
Singular Bodies (April 14-16 & 20-23, 2016)
Inspired by the 2014 production On Display, Singular Bodies is a series of ten solos for TDT's dancers created by a who's who of Toronto visual and performance artists. Offering a fascinating range of styles and points of view on the body in visual art practice, this is a chance to experience TDT's dancers- and the idea of choreography in fresh, unexpected new ways.
Choreographers to include Stephen Andrews, Nadia Belerique, Diane Borsato, Chris Curreri, Brendan Fernandes, Marisa Hoicka, Johanna Householder, Jean-Paul Kelly, Bridget Moser, Jon Sasaki and Jim Verburg.
Marienbad (April 14-16 & 20-23, 2016)
Created and performed by Christopher House and Jordan Tannahill, and following on their provocative 2014 collaboration for On Display, Marienbad is a new full-length work that places two queer men in a landscape of shifting meanings and intentions. Movement, text, image and architecture come together in this celebration of inter-generational complicity. Jordan Tannahill is a playwright, filmmaker, writer and director who has quickly become a major force in Canadian theatre. Christopher House has been a leading choreographer and performer for over 35 years.
