THE STUDENT PRINCE, Sigmund Romberg’s great masterwork from the 1920’s is Toronto Operetta Theatre’s Holiday Production for the 2015/2016 Season with performances at the St. Lawrence Centre on Dec. 27 (mat), 28, & 31, 2015 and matinees on January 2 & 3, 2016. The season begins on November 1, 2015 (mat) with a tribute to Gilbert & Sullivan and a semi-staged performance of their first great hit, H.M.S. PINAFORE. Rounding out the season is the Canadian Premiere of Jacinto Guerrero’s zarzuela LOS GAVILANES or The Sparrow Hawks, on April 27 & 29 at 8 pm and April 30 & May 1, 2016 at 3 pm.
“We are very pleased to announce our plans for this season,” said TOT’s General Director Guillermo Silva-Marin, “H.M.S. PINAFORE and THE STUDENT PRINCE are iconic works of music theatre and Guerrero’s LOS GAVILANES continues our goal of presenting the Spanish musical world to our patrons and the burgeoning Latino population of the GTA. In recognition of our pioneering efforts in this repertoire, the zarzuela will be produced with a special grant from the Canada Council for the Arts.”
Dedicated to supporting Canada’s wealth of vocal talent, TOT has assembled stellar casts featuring artists both established and emerging. Charlotte Knight, Gregory Finney and Rosalind McArthur are among the cast for H.M.S. PIANFORE under pianist and music director Natasha Fransblow. Romberg’s student Prince Karl Franz will be Ernesto Ramirez serenading Kathie, performed by Jennifer Taverner in her TOT debut with TOT favourites Curtis Sullivan and Stefan Fehr as Dr. Engel and Count Detleff. Canadian Opera Company conductor Derek Bate leads the orchestra and Silva-Marin directs.
Continuing the Viennese Silvesterball tradition, there will be a New Year’s Eve Gala performance and party on December 31, 2015 at the HotHouse Restaurant and Bar. Dinner, dancing, champagne at midnight with friends and family!
Rounding out the season, Guerrero’s LOS GAVILANES is filled with the fire and passion of Spain as romance, fortune seekers and unrequited love get the full attention of soprano Miriam Khalil and Guillermo Silva-Marin under conductor Larry Beckwith, who leads a full cast, chorus and orchestra.
In addition to support from the Canada Council for the Arts, Toronto Arts Council, Ontario Arts Council, the Jackman Foundation, Bedolfe Foundation, and the J. P. Bickell Foundation, the company counts among its partners CIBC Private Wealth Management, HotHouse Restaurant and Bar, Huziak Graphic Designs and media sponsors Epoch Times, MZ Media and NTD Television.
