Written in 1938, Patrick Hamilton's nail-biting Victorian thriller Gaslight (or Angel Street as it was called when it was first presented in North America) was a hit at its Broadway premiere in 1941 and has been revived three times since. It remains one of the longest-running non-musicals in Broadway history, with a total of 1,295 performances.
Set in fog-bound London in 1880 in the home of Jack Manningham and his wife Bella, Gaslight tells of a woman's descent into madness. It is late afternoon, a time which Hamilton notes as being the time "before the feeble dawn of gaslight and tea". At the opening of the drama Bella is clearly on edge, and the stern reproaches from her overbearing husband, who flirts with the maid, make matters worse. What most perturbs Bella is Jack's unexplained disappearances from the house: he will not tell her where he is going, and this increases her anxiety. As the drama unfolds, it becomes clear that Jack is intent on convincing Bella that she is going insane. Then, late one evening, a stranger comes to the house while Jack is out and explains that he is there to help Bella. Who is this man and what secrets does he know? Why is Jack tormenting his wife? Is Bella truly going mad? This Victorian thriller will keep audiences on the edge of their seats as they discover the mysteries of the Manningham home!
SCP is proud to be offering a completely new version of Gaslight by David Jacklin, who has transformed this classic three act psychological drama into an even more tense, fast moving and gripping two act thriller.
"Hamilton's hybrid of whodunit, psychological thriller and comedy, continues to offer two hours of enjoyable escape." ~ Elyse Sommer, Curtain Up
