Elaine has been practising, teaching and writing about Mindfulness for a long, long time. Don’t miss her humorous slant on what it means to be “mindful.” Read Elaine on how to Get More from Your Glass of Wine with this Mindful Drinking Exercise in Mindful Magazine. Or tune in to CBC's Tapestry to hear Elaine offer a mindful drinking practice on air.
Can you practice Mindfulness in a bar? What an experience it has been to ask that question and have hundreds of people come out to a bar and practice. From appearances on CBC's Here and Now and the popular response to her monthly column at Mindful.org, Mindful Martinis reflects yet another of Elaine's contributions to this groundbreaking field, a unique mindfulness class with a social component, bringing mindfulness off of the cushion and onto the bar stool.
For the past 20 years, teacher and artist Elaine Smookler has explored mindfulness as a theme in the creation of a rich array of projects for stage, screen and print. These days Elaine is Lead, Introductory Programs at the Centre for Mindfulness Studies and offers mindfulness training around the GTA, including The Mindfulness Project at Sick Kids hospital, as well as on-line to corporate professionals through eMindful. Bringing Mindfulness to the next generation, Elaine regularly speaks to teens in schools with her Planting Mindful Seeds workshop, work she continues through her association with Mindfulness Everyday. For 2016, U of T Factor-Inwentash School of Social Work has invited her to create a new workshop on using mindfulness to work with creative blocks.
Most of us know what martinis are . . . but what the heck is mindfulness? Research shows a link between our short attention spans and a ballooning mental health crisis. Mindfulness teaches a simple, effective way to access other networks of the brain simply by paying attention to what is happening while it is happening, and doing it over and over.
