Toronto (August 12, 2015) - Old Norman Productions is pleased to an- nounce the world premiere of Three Women Mourn the Apocalypse, an original work by New York-based, Toronto-born playwright Hannah Rittner (Estate, Love & Exile), debuting in Toronto, September 16-20th, 2015 at The Theatre Centre (1115 Queen St. W.).
Three Women Mourn the Apocalypse explores the role of the artist in a hyper-capitalist, pre-apocalyptic world disconnected from nature and hu- man compassion. Directed by Marina McClure, produced by and featur- ing Toronto native Nicole Cardoni (Sonny Under the Assumption, Being Erica), the play was initially workshopped through Old Norman Productions in Brooklyn, NY earlier this year.
"I am obsessed by the possibility of two political enemies falling in love," said Rittner. "These kinds of relationships, laced with love, humour, rage and transformation riddle my work."
The play opens on aristocrat Samantha (Cardoni) and anarchist Melina (Sarah Baskin), surviving on gummy bears and sedatives, in an under- ground bunker on the eve of global destruction. As the end nears, the women turn on each other. Will the couple be restored to domestic bliss with the help of Corporate Healer Ekora (Carol Brown), assigned by Corporate App, the international corporation that has replaced all governments? Or will they devour one another as the curtain falls on the world itself?
Proud Canadians, Baskin, Cardoni and Rittner are excited to be able to
premiere Three Women Mourn the Apocalypse at home. "I may have a New York address, but, there's no doubt, I'm a Blue Jay's fan to the end," says Cardoni. "Yankees who?"
