This November, The Theatre Centre and Why Not Theatre present three innovative plays from three pioneering playwrights for a single $60 ticket: The November Ticket.
Featuring critically-acclaimed work from Governor General Award-winner Nicolas Billon, Obie Award-winner Jackie Sibblies Drury, and Governor General Award-winner Jordan Tannahill, The November Ticket will animate The Theatre Centre’s cultural hub with a star-studded company of directors, actors, designers, and original, inventive theatre.
Marking its Toronto premiere at The Theatre Centre is Nicolas Billon’s BUTCHER, which received its world premiere in Calgary at Alberta Theatre Projects in 2014. A mysterious old man is dumped at a police station on Christmas Eve. He speaks a foreign language and is found wearing a military uniform and a Santa hat. A meat hook dangles around his neck, with a business card that says “arrest me”. As a lawyer, a police officer, and a translator attempt to unravel the truth, they uncover a past that can’t stay buried, and a decades-old quest for justice that must be served.
Directed by the multi-award winning Weyni Mengesha and starring John Koensgen, Michelle Monteith, Andrew Musselman, and Tony Nappo, BUTCHER is a Why Not Theatre and Butcher’s Block co-production.
“Ingenious, jaw-dropping…” – The Calgary Sun
4 out of 4 stars – The Globe and Mail
Winner of the 2015 Calgary Theatre Critics Award for Best New Script
The Theatre Centre is proud to present Jackie Sibblies Drury’s WE ARE PROUD TO PRESENT A PRESENTATION ABOUT THE HERERO OF NAMIBIA, FORMERLY KNOWN AS SOUTHWEST AFRICA, FROM THE GERMAN SUDWESTAFRIKA, BETWEEN THE YEARS 1884-1915. A group of young actors meet in a rehearsal hall and set out to tell the little-known story of the first genocide of the 20th century. As the actors explore their own experiences and prejudices, the full force of a horrific past hits closer to home than anyone ever expected.
The multi-award winning Ravi Jain, Artistic Director of Why Not Theatre, and longtime collaborator of The Theatre Centre will direct the Canadian premiere of WE ARE PROUD TO PRESENT . . . , starring Michael Ayres, Brett Donahue, Darcy Gerhart, Brendan McMurtry-Howlett, Khadijah Roberts-Abdullah, and Marcel Stewart.
“Devastatingly funny. Dangerous and primal and weird” – The Washington Post
““We Are Proud” impressively navigates the tricky boundaries that separate art and life, the haunted present and the haunting historical past.” – The New York Times
The second Toronto premiere in The November Ticket is Jordan Tannahill’s LATE COMPANY, back by popular demand after a successful sold-out workshop run at SummerWorks 2013. One year after tragedy strikes, two families sit down for a restorative justice dinner. Instead of finding the closure they seek, their good intentions reveal layers of parental, sexual, and political hypocrisy. Tannahill’s voice is stark, honest, and authentic.
Multi-disciplinary artist Peter Pasyk returns to direct LATE COMPANY starring Rosemary Dunsmore, Paul Fauteux, Richard Greenblatt, Fiona Highet, and Liam Sullivan. A surface/underground production presented by Why Not Theatre.
“Jordan Tannahill's LATE COMPANY: layered, urgent, timely script, strong direction, brilliant acting. Hope it gets remounted” – Now Magazine
