TAPESTRY OPERA continues to drive the evolution of opera with an innovative 36th season. Artistic Director Michael Hidetoshi Mori is proud to unveil two world premiere productions alongside a full season of ground-breaking programming, including cutting-edge collaborations with renowned international companies and punk rockers.
In collaboration with Scottish Opera, Tapestry presents The Devil Inside, the latest work from Britain’s renowned librettist-composer team Louise Welsh and Stuart Macrae. Inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson’s short story The Bottle Imp, the opera explores one man’s struggle after finding a bottle with the power to grant anyone’s desires – with a catch. If anyone dies with the bottle in their possession, their soul goes straight to hell. Acclaimed director Matthew Richardson and conductor Michael Rafferty are joined by a strong international cast including mezzo-soprano Rachel Kelly, tenor Nicholas Sharratt, and baritone Steven Page. The Devil Inside runs March 10, 12, and 13, 2016 at Harbourfront Centre Theatre and will be the first time Scottish Opera and the Scottish Opera Orchestra have appeared in North America.
The season continues with ROCKING HORSE WINNER, featuring a libretto by acclaimed Canadian playwright Anna Chatterton and music by Gareth Williams, based on a short story by D.H. Lawrence. Representing the first full-scale production to be directed by Artistic Director Michael Hidetoshi Mori for the company, this one-act opera is a tragedy about a sensitive, developmentally challenged young man dangerously obsessed with changing the bad luck of his family and winning the love of his mother. ROCKING HORSE WINNER will be presented in late spring 2016.
Back for a third year, the critically acclaimed Tapestry Explorations series returns with Tap:Ex METALLURGY, presented from November 19–21, 2015. Tap:Ex is TAPESTRY OPERA’s experimental concert series, exploring brand new modes of operatic storytelling for the twenty-first century. This season, Tap:Ex METALLURGY unveils a collaboration with members of FUCKED UP, Canada’s Polaris-winning punk provocateurs.
This season’s presentation of TAPESTRY SONGBOOK VI features acclaimed music director, pianist, and now Tapestry’s 2015-2016 Conductor-in-Residence, Jordan de Souza, alongside a showcase of Canada’s fastest-rising young opera stars performing highlights from the extensive repertoire of TAPESTRY OPERA’s 36-year Canadian collection. TAPESTRY SONGBOOK VI runs February 6, 2016.
In a special addition to the season, Tapestry presents the beta-premiere of SELFIE, directed by Michael Hidetoshi Mori, is a special addition to the season. Featuring libretto by Julie Tepperman and music composed by Chris Thornborrow, SELFIE is a media-rich production about the risks of high school social pressures in the digital age. Two performances of this pay-what-you-can workshop production will take place October 2 and 3, 2015, at the Ernest Balmer Studio in Tapestry Opera’s Distillery District headquarters.
“Great contemporary art captures the spirit of its time, and that’s exactly what Tapestry’s 36th season will do,” says Michael Hidetoshi Mori, Tapestry Opera’s Artistic Director. “Mixing the best of tradition and the most exciting musical innovations of our era, the works we present this year represent ‘opera from the heart of here and now’.”
