About Toronto Masque Theatre
Founded in 2003 by Artistic Director Larry Beckwith, Toronto Masque Theatre is one of the only companies in the world devoted to the creation and performance of masque. Taking its inspiration from the rich courtly masque tradition of the late Renaissance, Toronto Masque Theatre explores the limitless possibilities of the art form by bringing together music, dance and theatre to create productions that have been praised for their warmth, originality and excellence.
Toronto Masque Theatre has produced over 40 critically acclaimed productions, ranging in repertoire from the late Renaissance through to new works that reinvent this historic performing art form for the 21st century. In seeking to create a body of Canadian work in the masque tradition, Toronto Masque Theatre has commissioned eight new works by Canadian composers and librettists. The Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding New Musical/Opera was awarded to Toronto Masque Theatre’s 2013 commission, The Lesson of Da Ji, by composer Alice Ping Yee Ho and librettist Marjorie Chan. The company has also presented music theatre works by Monteverdi, Purcell, Handel, John Blow, Igor Stravinsky and John Beckwith, plays by Edna St. Vincent Millay, James Reaney, Patrick Garland and Molière, and “variety” evenings such as Les roses de la vie, Commedia, and Masques of Irony.
