Outgoing Shaw Festival artistic director Jackie Maxwell has been appointed into the Order of Ontario.
Lieutenant Governor of Ontario Elizabeth Dowdeswell will appoint Maxwell and 24 other notable Ontario residents during the annual ceremony at Queen's Park Jan. 20.
The Belfast-born Maxwell is entering her 14th and final season as artistic director of the Niagara-on-the-Lake company. For the upcoming season she will direct productions of Sweeney Todd and Uncle Vanya.
The Order of Ontario is the province's highest official honour, recognizing individuals who have demonstrated excellence and achievement in any field benefitting the people of Ontario or anywhere in the world.
This year's slate includes concert pianist/conductor Anton Kuerti, palliative care advocate Sue Bailey and veteran fire captain John Gignac.
"These 25 accomplished individuals inspire us," said Dowdeswell in a statement. "From breaking ground in advances in health care, to speaking out for those who cannot speak for themselves, to nourishing our souls through art and music, they have served this province with dedication and generosity."
This year marks the Order of Ontario's 30th anniversary. Appointments are made on the recommendation of an independent advisory council based on public nominations.
Deadline for nominations for next year's appointments is March 30.
