Mixed Company Theatre (MCT) produces innovative, socially relevant drama as a tool for positive change. This nationally recognized not-for-profit company uses Forum Theatre and interactive arts to educate engage and empower audiences in schools, communities and workplace.
This spring, MCT will be presenting Half Full, written by Catherine Frid, which delivers a uniquely engaging form of experiential peer-led education. This play reduces the stigma of mental health and anxiety, and discovers tactics to support students and their peers.
ACTORS FOR NON-UNION SHOW
Actors should be able to play teenage characters. Acting and theatre experience required. Knowledge of mental health not required but an asset. Actors must be available to rehearse from March 18th– April 1st 2016 and tour the GTA from April 4th until April 22nd 2016, with the possibility of a week extension (April 25th- 29th, 2016). We are looking for a diverse cast.
Play Synopsis:
Josh is a jokester who enjoys running track and creeping his classmates on Facebook. Despite minor insecurities, life is good–until somebody starts an anonymous social media campaign against him. Josh finds it difficult to deal with the embarrassment and humiliation. Suddenly day-to-day stresses of family life and school start to overwhelm Josh, as he wrestles with his growing anxiety. Through open and supportive facilitation, this play leads students to discuss what Josh and others in the play can do to deal with anxiety.
Character Description:
Joshua: Teenager, male. Joshua is sociable and funny, and enjoys making fun of his classmates on Facebook and Youtube. Although he is one of the fastest runners in the school and comes off quite confident, he experiences anxiety. Over the course of the play, his anxiety gets worse and he becomes more and more insecure.
Anx: Joshua’s anxiety, teenager, male. Only speaks to Joshua and is invisible to other characters. Anx starts out small and timid, but grows into a huge overpowering presence over the length of the play.
Saffy, Mom, Ms. Tam, Internet: All female. Saffy is a teenager, friend and love-interest of Joshua. Mom is Joshua’s mom, who is an overbearing but well-meaning helicopter mom. Ms. Tam is Joshua’s teacher and track coach who is thoughtful, understanding and gives insight into Joshua’s anxiety. Internet is the enticing voice of the internet, which tries to lure Joshua into going online.
