Toronto, ON – The ninth annual Next Stage Theatre Festival (presented by the Toronto Fringe) closed on Sunday after showcasing 12 days of the best indie theatre in Canada. NSTF 2016 had the highest sales in the festival’s history: 8,700 tickets were sold and $104,000 was generated in box office revenue. The praise for the festival was universal and many shows boasted sold out performances.
The following are some festival highlights:
Mockingbird by Rob Kempson is the highest revenue generating show in Next Stage Mainspace History. This show begged us to walk away and discuss the grey area between innocence and authority and right and wrong. Rob Kempson is a force to be reckoned with.
A Man Walks Into A Bar by Rachel Blair. Reviewers and audiences agree that this was the show to see. The quick paced, terrifyingly beautiful script and honest acting ensured that the house was sold out for the better part of the festival.
From Judy to Bette and STUCK! The Antechamber series hit record highs thanks to the vivacity and brassiness of Rebecca Perry and Natasha Boomer.
All Our Yesterdays by Chloe Hung. Audiences and Critics agree that Ms. Hung is a playwright to watch for. A stunning and shocking look at the value of the lives of women.
Three Men In A Boat adapted for the stage by Mark Brownell. These three intrepid bachelors plus there dog packed them in every show. A Fan favourite for sure.
