Toronto, ON – The keepers of the sacred gather for The Watah Theatre’s 2015-2016 KENTE Season.
Watah Sage Secrets is a monthly lecture series honouring the sages amongst us; stalwarts of the community who have and continue to lay an impeccable foundation and example for us to emulate.
The community is invited to join us on Monday January 25, 2016 for an incredible discussion and talk back session with January’s Sage Secrets of Monique Mojica. As a Kuna and Rappahannock, acclaimed playwright, film and stage actor, Mojica is the former Artistic Director of Native Earth Performing Arts and the editor of a special issue of the Canadian Theatre Review on Native Theatre.
The presenting lecture by Monique Mojica, will be published by Sorplusi Publishing along with 8 other featured Sages of the 2015-2016 KENTE Season which includes the upcoming lectures by BaKari I. Lindsay, Lillian Allen, and Mumbi Tindyebwa, and past lectures by Motion, Rhoma Spencer and Honor Ford-Smith. Watah is adamant about the preservation of Black Canadian culture and legacy.

About The Watah Theatre: The Watah Theatre previously anitafrika dub theatre, is a performing arts company that specializes in the wholistic development and mentorship of primarily Black identified artists and also welcomes artists who are People of Colour, First Nations and or LGBTQQIP2SAA. Founded in 2008 and incorporated in 2014 as a non-profit by d’bi.young anitafrika, the organization cultivates artists as mentor-leaders of integrity. Past Watah Theatre alumni include CBC’s Amanda Parris, Stratford’s Bahia Watson, Manifesto’s Che Kothari and RISE Edutainment’s Randell Adjei.
About d’bi.young anitafrika: YWCA 2015 Woman of Distinction in the Arts, d’bi.young anitafrika, is the creator of the human development framework called The Sorplusi Method. Her art explores themes of identity, gender, sexuality, class and the human experience. anitafrika is a Canadian Poet of Honour recently featured as a Top Ten Poet on CNN, awarded a Vital People accolade by Toronto Community Foundation and a fellowship in the TAC-Banff Cultural Leaders Lab, for her tireless commitment to social development. She is also a recipient of two Dora Awards, a KM Hunter theatre award, and a Mayor’s Arts Award. anitafrika has worked and lectured extensively internationally, including a recent address at the United Nations. anitafrika is the Founder & Artistic Director of Canada’s Watah Theatre and Sorplusi Institute, where she teaches the Sorplusi Method as a transformative tool to over twenty-six artists-in-residence. Look out for her new plays ‘Esu Crossing The Middle Passage,’ ‘She, Mami Wata & The Pussy WitchHunt’ & ‘Bleeders,’ premiering in Toronto in Spring 2016.
