January 20, 2016… The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television announced its 2016 Canadian Screen Award nominations yesterday and the Stratford Festival received a whopping nine nominations, honouring the 2015 Stratford HD projects, King Lear, King John and Antony and Cleopatra.
“We are thrilled to have our first instalment of Stratford Festival HD honoured with so many nominations,” said Executive Director Anita Gaffney. “As we pursue our goal of filming all of Shakespeare’s plays over 10 years, we are extremely encouraged by this recognition, especially as it mirrors the positive response we have had from our patrons.”
“These nominations are welcome recognition indeed for this ambitious undertaking,” said Artistic Director Antoni Cimolino, who also directed King Lear. “I am personally delighted to see the nominations for King Lear, and equally proud of the success of all three titles.”

All three of these HD films were broadcast on CBC-TV, Canada’s national public broadcaster, and screened at Cineplex theatres across Canada. They were distributed in the U.S. and internationally through BY Experience.
The Canadian Screen Awards will be handed out at gala events in Toronto on Tuesday, March 8, Wednesday, March 9, and Sunday, March 13.
The second instalment of Stratford Festival HD kicks off on March 12 with the première of The Taming of the Shrew at Cineplex theatres across Canada, with an encore performance on March 17; Hamlet premières on April 23 with an encore on April 28; and The Adventures of Pericles on May 7 with an encore on May 12.
