January 21, 2016… Just as the Stratford Festival’s first three HD films have been recognized with nine Canadian Screen Award nominations, tickets for the latest offerings go on sale through Cineplex Entertainment. The Taming of the Shrew, Hamlet and The Adventures of Pericles are set to première at Cineplex theatres across Canada this spring.
“These Cineplex screenings are an excellent way for people who can’t get to Stratford to see the Festival’s work,” says Executive Director Anita Gaffney. “We are especially excited this year to be screening a thrilling production of Hamlet directed by our Artistic Director, Antoni Cimolino. It premières on April 23, Shakespeare’s birthday and also the 400th anniversary of his death. The production received fantastic reviews when it was on stage last summer, and has transferred perfectly to the screen, using the highest production values while also retaining the breathtaking beauty of the stage play.”
“Our commitment to bringing the best on-stage performances to the big screen continues with a new season of the Stratford Festival’s film series,” said Brad LaDouceur, Vice President, Event Cinema, Cineplex Entertainment. “As a proudly Canadian company, we’re excited that audiences from coast to coast will have the opportunity to see and experience some of the best theatre productions our country has to offer."
Stratford’s films have been praised for presenting Shakespeare with spectacular clarity, offering new inspiration to even the most seasoned theatregoer. Captured with 10 cameras and 128 channels of sound during a single live performance, each production is faithful to the stage version, but adds the intimacy of film with an array of camera angles that bring the audience even closer than Stratford’s remarkably intimate theatres already allow.
The Taming of the Shrew
Featuring Ben Carlson and Deborah Hay
Directed for the stage by Chris Abraham | Directed for the screen by Barry Avrich
Saturday, March 12, at 12:55 p.m.
Thursday, March 17, at 7 p.m.
This scintillating production of Shakespeare’s boisterous comedy The Taming of the Shrew stirs the emotions as the world’s greatest playwright pulls you into his most pointed social commentary. You decide whether the love story of Katherina and Petruchio is courtship or conquest, the breakdown of a defiant spirit or a breakthrough that liberates a heart deprived of love. Deborah Hay gives a “performance for the ages” as the Shrew, and Ben Carlson is the perfect counterpoint as her plotting suitor, creating a chemistry that sets the stage alight.

A ghostly visitor with a shocking secret, a daughter devastated by loss, a deadly duel and the most famous question in all of drama: Shakespeare’s iconic tragedy will hold you spellbound. Hamlet has been called the greatest play in the English language and this production “the most complete, most fulfilling, most satisfying in decades of theatregoing.” Jonathan Goad is witty and courageous in the title role, but also deeply human. The film excites and surprises at every turn, with a cast of some of the finest classical actors in the world bringing to life the most intense and heart-breaking relationships the stage has ever seen.

A storm at sea brings love into the life of Pericles, Prince of Tyre, and another snatches it away. This magical production of Shakespeare’s epic tale is a delight for the eye and ear. Filled with music and brilliant spectacle, it follows a fairy-tale hero on a miraculous journey to one of literature’s most poignant reunions. Evan Buliung gives a sweeping performance, portraying the dashing young prince with verve and swagger, and taking him into his elder years with sorrowful tenderness. “Moving and fun from beginning to end,” it is a story rarely told, and one you won’t soon forget.

These three events are part of an initiative by the Stratford Festival, North America’s leading classical theatre company, to capture all of Shakespeare’s plays over 10 years, creating the first North American video collection of the complete works of Shakespeare.
Last spring saw the release of King Lear, King John and Antony and Cleopatra. The films were greeted with widespread acclaim. “The Stratford Festival HD series is off on the right foot. Great actors in great productions of great plays,” wrote the Toronto Star’s Richard Ouzounian at the time. “This is a reminder of why we preserve the theatre on film.”
Canadian distribution is through Cineplex Entertainment, which specializes in bringing world-class events and performances to the big screen. Cinema screenings will be followed by a broadcast window on CBC-TV, Canada’s national public broadcaster. Digital and on-demand release will follow.
