Toronto audiences refuse to let KINKY BOOTS end at the Royal Alexandra Theatre. The show, which had its Canadian debut on June 16, 2015, was originally booked for a 12-week run. The demand from audiences was so strong, it has already been extended three times. In fact, GASLIGHT, which was supposed to play at the Royal Alex was moved to a reconfigured (at a cost of hundreds of thousands of dollars) Ed Mirvish Theatre, so that KINKY BOOTS could be extended. (GASLIGHT opened January 20 and will play until February 28, 2016.)
Well, it’s happened again.
Continued strong demand for KINKY BOOTS has forced its producers to extend it again at the Royal Alex, until May 15, 2016.
This will be the absolute final extension, as the physical production is required elsewhere to begin rehearsals for a long-planned Australian production of the show.
Cyndi Lauper and Harvey Fierstein, the authors of the show, state:
“We’re so thrilled the Toronto audiences have embraced Kinky Boots in such a big way," Lauper said about the news. “How exciting to be extended for a fourth time in this great city," Fierstein added. "Toronto audiences are incredible!”
It also means that another show scheduled for the Royal Alex will be moved to the new configuration of the Ed Mirvish Theatre. David Hare’s magnificent play about Oscar Wilde, THE JUDAS KISS, which will star the great British stage and film actor Rupert Everett, will now be performed at the Ed Mirvish Theatre, from March 22 to May 1, 2016, before heading to New York, where it will have a month-long run at the prestigious Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Harvey Theatre.
Explains David Mirvish:
“It’s been like a giant jigsaw puzzle, trying to match shows to theatres and trying to appease audience demand. I’m not complaining; it’s a happy problem to have. But it hasn’t been easy to solve, given all the various pressures.
“Happily, the new configuration of the Ed Mirvish Theatre – which brings the capacity and feel of the auditorium from 2,300 seats to an intimate 1,400 seats – has worked beautifully for GASLIGHT.
“This good news has made our decision to also move THE JUDAS KISS to the same venue much easier. It is a play that requires intimacy and I’m delighted to report it will have it at the Ed Mirvish Theatre.
“This has made the Royal Alexandra Theatre available for us to have a final extension of the ever-popular KINKY BOOTS. We can have 10 more weeks of it — happy news for the show’s multitude of fans and for those who have been putting off seeing this wonderful and joyful show.
“But May 15th is the absolute final date that KINKY BOOTS can play in Toronto. The sets and costumes are expected in Melbourne, Australia, for their production later this year.
