AlvegoRoot Theatre is pleased to announce its 2016 Season in partnership with Fanshawe Pioneer Village. In the summer of 2016 AlvegoRoot will present two world premiere productions by local London playwrights in the beautiful setting of Dr. Jones’ Barn at Fanshawe Pioneer Village. The plays will run in repertory from July 6th to July 28th.
“We have assembled a fabulous season of a delightful comedy and a poignant First World War story. Both plays ask questions about pacifism and war. Is there a time to fight? Is there a time for peace? AlvegoRoot and Fanshawe Pioneer Village’s partnership in presenting great local theatre was a huge success this past season and we are immensely looking forward to July 2016!”- Adam Corrigan Holowitz Artistic Director

THE CHEESE POET
A Dairy-ing Melodrama

Opening the season will be the comedy THE CHEESE POET. Carrying on the tradition of last year’s hit The Angel of Long Point, THE CHEESE POET will be in the style of a melodrama that would have been performed in 1900’s Ontario. The play follows James McIntyre who has spent his life in Ingersoll working as a carpenter and writing poetry about cheese. Now in his twilight years he embarks on a quest, with his loyal assistant Sam, to bring peace to world through the re-construction of the fabled ten ton cheese. Complication arises when he is pursued by his greedy nephew Edwin and a curmudgeonly university professor intent on dispelling his dreams of peace through cheese! The play will be written and directed by Adam Corrigan Holowitz.
“Creating these melodramas is so much fun. We mix stage illusion, comedy, melodrama, music and a bit of classical inspiration. This year’s adventure has a strong Don Quixote feel to it. Plus some ‘great’ cheese poetry!” - Adam Corrigan Holowitz
Pressures on the home front explored in new World War One play
CHICKEN FEATHER
By Jeff Culbert
The second production of AlvegoRoot’s season will be the world premiere of London playwright Jeff Culbert’s CHICKEN FEATHER. When Canadians were called to fight in The Great War in 1914, droves of Londoners rose to the challenge. But some of the men who chose not to enlist were publicly shamed by young women who pinned white feathers on them to show their disapproval. CHICKEN FEATHER follows the relationship of a young man who gets pinned and the young woman who pins him.
“Jeff Culbert brings great humanity to telling this story of three Canadians before, during and after the Great War. I am thrilled AlvegoRoot will be playing host to his new play, especially after the success of our production of Culbert’s Running Rude in 2013.”- Adam Corrigan Holowitz
Both productions will designed by Sue Parke with musical direction by Stephen Holowitz.
Casting will be announced soon.
