Toronto, ON – On February 5, Théâtre français de Toronto and Canadian Stage present the original French version of KISS & CRY at the Bluma Appel Theatre — with English Surtitles.
After four years touring the world, the theatrical phenomenon KISS & CRY is finally performed for the first time in Toronto in its original French (with English Surtitles)! It’s a groundbreaking venture for TfT which is co presenting this unique show with Canadian Stage. Indeed a show of this scope and magnitude has never been presented by Théâtre français in the past.
Originally conceived in Mons (Belgium) in 2011 and based on the choreography by Michèle Anne De Mey, it also features the genius work of award-winning filmmaker Jaco Van Dormael (Oscar winner 1982; Caméra d’or, Cannes festival). This unique work-of-art perfectly blends several disciplines: poetry, cinema, dance, theatre, new media and DIY in order to create before our very eye an epic love-story set in a miniature world.
On stage, a ballet of dancers and cameramen are manipulating with utmost precision model cars, trains and lighting equipment. On screen, two hands are filmed live in close-up, portraying a pair of lovers as they dance around a set of minuscule landscapes…the illusion works like a charm and soon milk diluted in a water tank becomes a cloud formation in a distant sky. Meanwhile spectators can gaze at both the magic on screen and the magicians on stage.
The story? “Where do people go when they disappear from our life, from our memory?” This is the question haunting an elderly woman (performed by Michèle Anne De Mey). As she waits alone on the platform of a train station, she reflects on her greatest love-stories, starting with her first — a boy whose hand she touched for a few seconds on a crowded train when she was 13.
A show imbued with rare sensuality and exceptional finesse.
