After an extremely successful run at the Wales World Stage Design Festival, Theatre Parallax Toronto returns to the Toronto stage with their powerhouse performance piece KATA . In KATA four male subjects, observed by an audience of investors, are bred and hardened into commercial war machines. Performers in KATA have undergone two and a half months of intense physical training in order to prepare for this theatrical endeavour. Preparation has extended well beyond the rehearsal hall into a monastic existence of zero alcohol, a strict diet, and daily workouts before and after rehearsals. The absence of a costume designer is linked to the idea that all four male performers are transforming their bodies, exploring the idea of BODY as costume .
Directed by Maite Jacobson ( A D- Taming of the Shrew, Canstage Shakes peare in High Park, XYZ - Penumbra Collective, AD- The Re sistible Rise of Arturo Ui - Red Light District ) and starring Anthony Di Feo ( King John Redux, Pure Carbon Collective ), Thomas McDevitt ( SILK, Hamilton Fringe ) , Dylan Shumka-Wh ite ( Orpheus and Eurydice- Theatre TOn ight, MacArthur Park Suite- SummerWorks Festival), and Luke Pieroni ( Binge - Toronto Fringe) . KATA was born out of York University’s very first graduating class in the devised theatre department. The show has received numerous Art’s Council workshops, and is finally premiering a full scale production that promises to be one of the most original and provocative pieces on stage this fall.
Merging the principals of Artaud's Theatre of Cruelty and Brecht’s Epic Theatre, KATA pushes all four of its performers to their absolute physical maximum. The audience, cast a group of investors observe the performers as they are transformed into products of hyper masculinity, to be bought and sold. KATA seeks to challenge contemporary notions of masculinity and the sustainability of the ideal masculine form. As the product test progresses and the veneer of masculinity cracks, the audience is left asking, “Is this a sustainable investment?”
