Albert Schultz, Founding Artistic Director of Soulpepper Theatre Company, with producing partners Kabin and The Storefront Theatre, today announced additional details for this November’s highly anticipated Soulpepper presentation of Chasse-Galerie. Based on one of Canada’s most beloved folk tales, the Dora Award and Toronto Theatre Critics’ Award-winning musical Chasse-Galerie follows the adventures of four coureuses des bois stuck deep in the Québec forest on New Year’s Eve. The four woods-women, pining for warmth and their loved ones, strike a deal with a mysterious stranger who offers to enchant their canoe to fly back to Montreal. The catch: make it back before dawn, or pay the devil’s price. Chasse-Galerie, book adapted by director Tyrone Savage, with music and lyrics by James Smith, was the hit of last year’s holiday theatre season at The Storefront Theatre, and it has been reimagined for a November mainstage run at Soulpepper.
“What started off as an idea born from a beer bottle-backing and a few stories told around the dinner table has become this amazing experience called Chasse-Galerie,” said Savage. “Our play, based on a folk tale, is set in Old Montreal, sometime before the turn of the 20th century. The audience is invited to take part in the events of the evening and are patrons at the Flying Canoe Bar as well as members of the audience. As storytellers our first job is to create a space of rough magic in the theatre that permits our imagination to soar over vast distances and places even to the gates of hell itself. We invite the Chasse-Galerie audience to step out of their world and into ours, one filled with song and whiskey and adventure, a world only made possible by the collective act of imagining.”
From November 11 to 26, 2016, the Michael Young Theatre at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts will be transformed into a turn-of-the-century cabin outpost, complete with bar service inside of the theatre with a special Chasse-Galerie brew from Henderson Brewing Co. available for purchase. It’s an immersive, raucous and not-to-be-missed millennial twist on a holiday theatre tradition.
The cast of Chasse-Galerie features: Tess Benger, Mike Cox, Kat Letwin, Tyrone Savage, Shaina Silver-Baird, and Alicia Toner; with Soulpepper Academy members Ghazal Azarbad, Hunter Cardinal, Nicole Power and James Smith; and musicians Justin Han and Jason O’Brien.
Tickets for Chasse-Galerie range from $25 to $50. In celebration of Soulpepper’s 20th Anniversary Season, ArtsWorker and StagePlay (under 30) tickets are now available for only $20, conditions apply.
