“The Last Wife is an audacious, clever play.” – Times Colonist
“An exhilarating ride through one of history’s most fascinating periods.” – Victoria News
Set in contemporary North America, The Last Wife is a retelling of the gripping relationship between Katherine Parr and Henry VIII. It is a funny, powerful examination of patriarchy, sexual politics and women’s rights.
“I knew I wanted to write about her [Katherine Parr], but I had no desire to jump into a market already saturated with stuffy costume dramas” says playwright Kate Hennig. “So I linked the past with the present...or created some imagined world for both. That gave me room to really write a play about feminism and its recurring place in our history.”
“Kate is one of the most compelling and articulate playwrights working today. In 2017, the Stratford Festival will premiere The Virgin Trial, her companion piece to The Last Wife. It is wonderful to see Kate achieving such success.” says Eric Coates, GCTC’s Artistic Director.
Just three days ago, the cast and crew of The Last Wife closed a wildly successful run at Victoria’s Belfry Theatre with multiple sold out performances. During its premiere at the Stratford Festival, it was extended three times and enjoyed a completely sold out run.
