Culture Days and Nuit Blanche on the Bloor St. Culture Corridor
Everyone can enjoy and participate in free arts and culture at a special Bloor St. Culture Corridor hub of Culture Days on September 30, October 1, and October 2. Check out events being presented by Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema, The Royal Conservatory, Talisker Players, Gardiner Museum, Alliance française, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, Bata Shoe Museum, Museum of Estonians Abroad, and the Istituto Italiano di cultura.
Nuit Blanche exhibitions are on the Bloor St. Culture Corridor from Saturday, October 1 at 7pm through Sunday, October 2 at 7am, at the Gardiner Museum, Bata Shoe Museum, and The Royal Conservatory.
The Royal Conservatory of Music
The Royal Conservatory presents the wildly popular Koerner Hall Free for All on October 1, with aspiring and professional musicians enjoying their five minutes of glory on the Koerner Hall stage. Acoustic performances are 12pm- 3pm and amplified performances are 5pm - 8pm. For those unable to come in person, the event will be available on the "Live At Koerner Hall" livestream. On October 2, at 2pm, the new free Sunday Interludes concert series starts with 2016 Juno Award-winning saxophonist, composer, and arranger, Allison Au, and her quartet performing in Mazzoleni Concert Hall. Both of these concerts are part of the Bloor St. Culture Corridor Hub of Culture Days. The TD Jazz: The Art of the Trio series begins on October 29 with Kenny Barron Trio & Robi Botos Trio. The rest of the month sees the debuts of Spanish flamenco guitarist José Fernandez Torre, or "Tomatito" (little tomato, pictured here), who mixes flamenco with a tasty blend of jazz, Brazilian, and Turkish music on October 28, and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble on October 21. Drawn from the principal players of the orchestra, the Chamber Ensemble was created to perform celebrated works from the larger strings and woodwinds chamber music repertoire. Talisker Players
The Talisker Players open their concert season with Songs of Enchantment, on October 25 and 26, 8pm at Trinity St. Paul's Centre. An evening of words and music about magic, spells, and transformation, the production features a rare performance of R. Murray Schafer's Beauty and the Beast, as well as Malcolm Arnold's William Blake Songs, and excerpts from Purcell's The Fairy-Queen. Guest artists are Miriam Khalil, soprano, Lauren Segal, mezzo soprano, and Stewart Arnott, actor/reader. Tickets are at 416-978-8849 and more information is at www.taliskerplayers.ca.
Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre
October is full of artistic celebration and discussion at the Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre, a.k.a. "the J". In the gallery, archival photography from the Ontario Jewish Archives in The Corners of our Fields: Jewish Farming in Ontario, is on display October 6-30. For pottery enthusiasts, a special exhibition of the Betel on Bloor Pottery Exhibit takes place Sunday, October 9, 2-5pm. The Toronto Jewish Film Society presents A Fish in the Bathtub with The Divorce in a double screening on Sunday, October 16, at 11:30am and 3pm. Popular daytime drop-in lectures return in a big way with: Celebrating Five Volumes of Living Legacies, a book reading with editor Liz Pearl on October 20; Benjamin Brown: Toronto's First Jewish Architect with Dara Solomon of the Ontario Jewish Archives on October 27; and Jackson Pollock, America's Own Bad Boy of Painting Art Appreciation with Osnat Lippa on October 31. Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra
Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra is joined by one of the world's foremost period cellists, Christophe Coin, in his Tafelmusik debut in The Eloquent Cello. He performs Hadyn's masterful Cello concerto in C Major, which is considered one of the best concertos for any instrument from the early classical period. The concert also includes an inspired concerto by Boccherini, the Italian composer widely considered to be the first cello virtuoso, and one of Dittersdorf's atmospheric symphonies inspired by Ovid's Metamorphoses, in this case the story of Perseus' rescue of Andromeda. Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema kicks off Hot Docs' monthly screening series: Doc Soup with MOTLEY'S LAW (October 5 & 6), a look at a US lawyer's crusade for justice in Afghanistan. Gardiner Museum
October at the Gardiner Museum will be marked by a number of exciting events including Culture Days, Nuit Blanche, and the opening of the special exhibition True Nordic: How Scandinavia Influenced Design in Canada on October 13. The first exhibition of its kind, True Nordic features over 100 works by more than 60 designers including Kjeld and Erica Deichmann, Carl Poul Petersen, Karen Bulow, The Brothers Dressler, and Heidi Earnshaw. The Museum will offer free admission Friday, September 30 to Sunday, October 2 in celebration of Culture Days, with a special performance by Talisker Players on Saturday October 1 at 2pm of Puttin' on the Ritz: Selections from the Irving Berlin Songbook. Then, beginning at 7pm, the Gardiner will be animated inside and out for Nuit Blanche, Toronto's annual, city-wide contemporary art fest. Visitors will have access to the Museum's permanent collections, as well as two original artist projects: Korsi, an urban take on an Iranian communal tradition featuring all-night performances, and Urban Syncopation, a monumental light installation that maps the "heartbeat" of the city. Bata Shoe Museum
The Bata Shoe Museum welcomes October with Nuit Blanche Toronto on October 1, when contemporary artists transform outdoor space and people can visit the galleries from sunset to sunrise. In celebration of Culture Days and in partnership with Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, the Bata Shoe Museum is pleased to welcome violinist Patricia Ahern on October 2 at 3 pm. Patricia will present a one-hour program, performing music by Telemann, Biber, and Bach, all while giving context to the audience about this beautiful music. Admittance to this event and to the entire Bata Shoe Museum is free all day Sunday, October 2, in celebration of Culture Days. The popular Inuit Film Series comes back on October 13. PayWhatYouCan to enjoy a screening of Inuit Piqutingit (What Belongs to Inuit), which follows a group of Inuit elders who travelled to five museums in North America to experience how their culture is portrayed. On October 23, the Bata Show Museum presents the premiere of The Bishop Who Ate His Boots, a documentary about Isaac Stringer, an Anglican missionary stationed in the Arctic in the early 20th century. Family friend Gail Singer will introduce the film, and a tour of our Arctic exhibition will follow the screening. $15 per person. On October 29 and 30, join the BSM for a Halloween Extravaganza, where you can decorate a Halloween cookie and make a special craft. Kids who wear costumes get in for free! Japan Foundation, Toronto
The Japan Foundation, Toronto hosts a special exhibition featuring the artwork of Japanese writer and poet, Takashi Hiraide, from October 4 through November 5, 2016. TAKASHI HIRAIDE AIRPOST POETRY - Book Design From For One features Hiraide's book designs, inviting the visitor on a conceptual journey through time and space. Hiraide is the author of The Guest Cat, a New York Times bestseller, and has been invited to participate in the upcoming International Festival of Authors in Toronto. Soundstreams
Magic Flutes opens Soundstreams' 16/17 concert series at Koerner Hall on October 12. Rarely are five world-renowned flautists together on one stage: Patrick Gallois (France), Marina Piccinini (USA/Canada), Claire Chase (USA) and Canada's Robert Aitken and Leslie Newman. They are joined by some of Toronto's favourite performers including harpist Erica Goodman, violist Teng Li and four percussionists including Ryan Scott. It's an incredible opportunity for flute masterpieces by the likes of Takemitsu, Glass, Debussy, Michael Colgrass and Robert Aitken to be performed together on one program. Anna Höstman's new work, "The Pied Piper," a reimagining of that legendary tale, will weave its way through the evening to delight and surprise. Museum of Estonians Abroad/VEMU
At the Museum of Estonians Abroad/VEMU the exhibition Free Lines. Portraits from the Restored Republic of Estonia by Andrus Peegelis now on view. This exhibition marks 25 years since the restoration of the Republic of Estonia's independence. Anne Remmel's painting exhibition Resonance will be on display October 14-17, alongside other exciting events that will also be taking place during the weekend. Free admission. On Saturday, October 15 at 7pm Haide Männamäe and Toomas Tross will perform Piip and Tuut At Concert - the first performance this pair of clowns ever produced, created over many years in front of and with the help of the audience through improvisation. On Sunday, October 16, 12-5pm VEMU's doors will be open for the Annex Tour of Houses and Cultural Institutions. Anne Remmel be doing a painting demo during the event. Free admission. Alliance française Toronto hosts Denis Laramée for an exhibition titled "Coherence over time," opening on October 5. Lectures in October feature Béatrice Vaugrante, General Director of Amesty international Canada (October 4), Jane Couchman, Professor Emerita of French; Gender, Feminist and Women's Studies and Humanities at Glendon College and the Faculty of Graduate Studies, York University (October 6), comic-book artist and writer Philippe Girard and special guest Patrice Leconte (October 12), a lecture about Glenn Gould and the Toronto School presented in collaboration with the McLuhan Centre for Culture and Technology, the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto, and The Glenn Gould Foundation (October 15), Professor Emeritus of contemporary history at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris, Jean- Noël Jeannenay (October 18 ), Frédérique Marion, senior scientist in a French CNRS institute (October 24), and Lola Lafon, French writer, composer, feminist and libertarian (October 25).Two concerts will be presented in October. Des Équilibres ensemble, with Agnès Pyka (violin) and Laurent Wagschal (piano) on October 21 in tribute to Maurice Ravel and Albéric Magnard. Just in time for Halloween, Montreal's Socalled will present a live soundtrack to the 1915 silent horror film version of "the Golem" written and directed by Paul Wegener and Henrik Galeen on October 29. Thursdays at 7:30pm are film night. October features Le Petit Prince Patrice by Mark Osborne, the documentary Voyage in Barbarie directed by Delphine Deloget and Cécile Allegra, Chéreau's 1994 film Queen Margot, and Joanne Belluco's 2012 documentary The Terror Group. To celebrate Patrice Leconte, four of his movies will be screened on October 13 and 14: The Widow of Saint-Pierre, Girl on a bridge, Intimate strangers and Ridicule. Films are in French with English subtitles.
