The Great Canadian Theatre Company is launching three exciting new initiatives aimed at deepening audience experience and making theatre more accessible for all ages. “The Prologue Series” hosted by CBC personality Sandra Abma will feature a panel that brings theatre and non-theatre experts together to discuss themes that emerge from the current GCTC production. “The Hive” will serve as an introductory program for students on how a professional theatre works. “Especially for Seniors” increases access to GCTC productions for seniors citizens by providing transportation, a delicious meal, and an engaging talkback, all for our lowest ticket price.
“Theatres all across the country are looking to diversify their audiences and provide exciting opportunities for the public to engage with their work,” says Managing Director Hugh Neilson. “Under the guidance of a new strategic plan, these programs are helping GCTC to put an even greater focus on community engagement while providing opportunities that promote equity, diversity and inclusivity.”
The Prologue Series
“The Prologue Series” is designed to give audiences more behind-the-scenes access and insight into how productions come together. Hosted by CBC’s Sandra Abma, each pre-show event will feature a panel made up of a unique array of guests including artists, designers and experts who specialize in the themes of the shows. “The Prologue Series” is free to the public and will take place before the second preview of the following two productions in the Fritzi Gallery (2nd Floor of GCTC):
The Last Wife by Kate Hennig: Wednesday, November 2nd at 7:00 pm
Ronnie Burkett’s The Daisy Theatre: Wednesday, November 30th at 7:00 pm
The Hive
“The Hive” is a unique mentorship and learning program designed to introduce students to the inner workings of GCTC and the Ottawa theatre community at large. Students participating in “The Hive” will get to choose from a variety of workshops and shows to attend at GCTC, as well as receive special information about workshops, shows, and opportunities outside of GCTC. Participation is flexible so as to comply with busy student schedules. Both a development program and a youth subscription, “The Hive” will encourage the next generation of theatre-goers and creators.
Interested students can find out more information about “The Hive” at GCTC.ca/education.
Especially for Seniors
“Especially for Seniors” was created out of a desire to take care of the people who have been a major part of GCTC’s success for the last 42 years. The accessible, affordable program has been carefully developed to ensure that these individuals continue to benefit from the positive impact of theatre and remain active and engaged members of the community. The program provides transportation to the theatre (by arrangement), a nourishing meal catered by “Especially for Seniors” sponsor Thyme & Again, attendance at a performance, a question and answer or talkback component, and return transportation home for one low, accessible $20 price per person.
