The most celebrated theatre troupe in town, Garrison Little Theatre, is celebrating the kickoff of its 30th season this week.
Prior to the season opener on Friday, the group held a celebration of its three decades in theatre. Currents actors, casts from the past, season tickets holders and theatre enthusiasts joined together to celebrate the milestone moment. Mayor Wayne Redekop was there to present GLT’s founding members, Pat and Derek Joynes, with a certificate of appreciation on behalf of the town.
To celebrate the occasion, and to support the local arts scene which GLT is a integral part of, the group also handed out a sizeable donation towards the town’s new arts centre which is being built inside the high school currently under construction along Garrison Road.
Fred Louws, chair of the fundraising committee which needs $2 million to cover the cost of the theatre, accepted the cheque for $5,000 from GLT.
As for the starts of the latest season, GLT kicks things off with a light hearted romp, Last Round-up of the Guacamole Queens, on Friday.
The play centres around the Verdeen cousins, of Sweetgum, Texas, who are attempting to produce the ultimate high school reunion before the old building is torn down. With obstacles such as the demise of an ex-husband, a tanked romantic life due to one’s occupation as a mortuary cosmetologist and trying to live down an on-air catfight with a local televangelist, the cousins have to impress a governor’s aide with their party planning in order to nab the job of throwing the Governor’s birthday bash.
The cast features a diverse mix, inlcuding longtime GLT veterans and crowd favourites like Rick Nigh, Edie Pederson, Katie Davis, Darka Makarec, Linda Gorham, Sandy Moore, Pat Joynes, Derek Joynes, Brenda Bennett, Lily Groulx, Reynaoldo Baecher, Jim Kitchen and Catherine Kitchen.
The plays is mounted on Oct. 28, 29, 20, then continues next month on Nov. 4 and 5 at the Italo-Canadian Hall. Tickets available at Fort Erie Paints, 401 Garrison Road, or by phone at 905-991-8181.
