Bad Hats Theatre is thrilled to announce TALK 2016, a new event for all independent and established Toronto Theatre practitioners, hosted by Tarragon Theatre on Monday, November 7th at 7pm. The purpose of the evening is to generate discussion around bridging the gap between established institutions and emerging theatre creators, and to learn about what each other are working on.
The evening will feature three areas. In the first area you will find speakers from the indie and professional theatre circles as well as panel discussions with artists ranging from the newest theatre engines to the city’s biggest heavyweights.
The second area will be a more social environment with displays from the companies in attendance that feature mandates, upcoming events and ways to get involved. This is a space for asking questions about the work itself. There will be a table with calls for submissions for actors, collaborators, writers, designers etc. from the companies who choose to offer them. These submissions come with the caveat of having to actually meet the person you’re submitting to. Anyone who shows interest in submitting to one of the calls will be directed by our facilitator to the artist who provided the call. This is not necessarily about getting you a job, though we’re happy if you find work through this platform. This is about having a connection with a human instead of their email inbox.
The third area will be a bar. Because everyone loves a good party.
This event is an opportunity for Indie companies to meet face to face. While efforts are always made to see each other’s work, time & cash are limited and this isn’t always possible. There is a pattern of insular theatre making and viewing in this city and while we cannot add more hours to the day, we can broaden our sense of what’s happening.
This conversation is necessary. Established theatres report feeling consistently far away from the indie world and newer theatre makers feel unsure how to, perhaps even that there isn’t a place to, reach out from the shadows. We’ve forgotten that regardless of our trajectory or timeline, we’re all consistently developing. Too many of our connections happen online, on paper or not at all. There is room for far more humanity and transparency as we all work toward the common goal of making good art.
Over thirty five companies have confirmed attendance, ranging from brand new independent groups to seasoned professionals with thirty seasons under their belts.
